612c9384fd NFS: Fix the 'desynchronized value of nfs_i.ncommit' error
Redirtying a request that is already marked for commit will screw up the
accounting for NR_UNSTABLE_NFS as well as nfs_i.ncommit.
Ensure that all requests on the commit queue are labelled with the
PG_NEED_COMMIT flag, and avoid moving them onto the dirty list inside
nfs_page_mark_flush().

Also inline nfs_mark_request_dirty() into nfs_page_mark_flush() for
atomicity reasons. Avoid dropping the spinlock until we're done marking the
request in the radix tree and have added it to the ->dirty list.

5a6d41b32a NFS: Ensure PG_writeback is cleared when writeback fails
If the writebacks are cancelled via nfs_cancel_dirty_list, or due to the
memory allocation failing in nfs_flush_one/nfs_flush_multi, then we must
ensure that the PG_writeback flag is cleared.

Also ensure that we actually own the PG_writeback flag whenever we
schedule a new writeback by making nfs_set_page_writeback() return the
value of test_set_page_writeback().
The PG_writeback page flag ends up replacing the functionality of the
PG_FLUSHING nfs_page flag, so we rip that out too.

60fa3f769f NFS: Fix two bugs in the O_DIRECT write code
Do not flag an error if the COMMIT call fails and we decide to resend the
writes. Let the resend flag the error if it fails.

If a write has failed, then nfs_direct_write_result should not attempt to
send a commit. It should just exit asap and return the error to the user.

634707388b [PATCH] nfs: nfs_getattr() can't call nfs_sync_mapping_range() for non-regular files
Looks like we need a check in nfs_getattr() for a regular file. It makes
no sense to call nfs_sync_mapping_range() on anything else. I think that
should fix your problem: it will stop the NFS client from interfering
with dirty pages on that inode's mapping.

89a09141df [PATCH] nfs: fix congestion control
The current NFS client congestion logic is severly broken, it marks the
backing device congested during each nfs_writepages() call but doesn't
mirror this in nfs_writepage() which makes for deadlocks. Also it
implements its own waitqueue.

Replace this by a more regular congestion implementation that puts a cap on
the number of active writeback pages and uses the bdi congestion waitqueue.

Also always use an interruptible wait since it makes sense to be able to
SIGKILL the process even for mounts without 'intr'.

0b4d414714 [PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctl
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered
sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is
pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented.

I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of
register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register
duplicate sysctl entries.

So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in
the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future
enhancments harder.

cd354f1ae7 [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.

To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.

Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,
arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig,
allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all
configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were
introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

43d78ef2ba NFS: disconnect before retrying NFSv4 requests over TCP
RFC3530 section 3.1.1 states an NFSv4 client MUST NOT send a request
twice on the same connection unless it is the NULL procedure. Section
3.1.1 suggests that the client should disconnect and reconnect if it
wants to retry a request.

Implement this by adding an rpc_clnt flag that an ULP can use to
specify that the underlying transport should be disconnected on a
major timeout. The NFSv4 client asserts this new flag, and requests
no retries after a minor retransmit timeout.

Note that disconnecting on a retransmit is in general not safe to do
if the RPC client does not reuse the TCP port number when reconnecting.

e3db7691e9 [PATCH] NFS: Fix race in nfs_release_page()
NFS: Fix race in nfs_release_page()

invalidate_inode_pages2() may find the dirty bit has been set on a page
owing to the fact that the page may still be mapped after it was locked.
Only after the call to unmap_mapping_range() are we sure that the page
    can no longer be dirtied.
In order to fix this, NFS has hooked the releasepage() method and tries
to write the page out between the call to unmap_mapping_range() and the
call to remove_mapping(). This, however leads to deadlocks in the page
reclaim code, where the page may be locked without holding a reference
    to the inode or dentry.

Fix is to add a new address_space_operation, launder_page(), which will
attempt to write out a dirty page without releasing the page lock.

	  echo "De-casting $f..."
	  perl -pi -e "s/ ?= ?\([^\)]*\) *(k[cmz]alloc) *\(/ = \1\(/" $f
	done

And then go through and reinstate those cases where code is casting pointers
to non-pointers.

And then drop a few hunks which conflicted with outstanding work.

0b67130149 NFS: Fix asynchronous read error handling
We must always call ->read_done() before we truncate the page data, or
decide to flag an error. The reasons are that
in NFSv2, ->read_done() is where the eof flag gets set.
	in NFSv3/v4 ->read_done() handles EJUKEBOX-type errors, and
		  v4 state recovery.

However, we need to mark the pages as uptodate before we deal with short
read errors, since we may need to modify the nfs_read_data arguments.

We therefore split the current nfs_readpage_result() into two parts:
nfs_readpage_result(), which calls ->read_done() etc, and
nfs_readpage_retry(), which subsequently handles short reads.

Note: Removing the code that retries in case of a short read also fixes a
bug in nfs_direct_read_result(), which used to return a corrupted number of
bytes.

65f27f3844 WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context data
Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data.
The work function can use container_of() to work out the data.

For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the
pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the
structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit.

To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the
work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution.

Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further
scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the
work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself
that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything
else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a
problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch).

However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work
function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container
with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the
work_struct by calling work_release().

In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special
initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR).

Separate delayable work items from non-delayable work items be splitting them
into a separate structure (delayed_work), which incorporates a work_struct and
the timer_list removed from work_struct.

The work_struct struct is huge, and this limits it's usefulness. On a 64-bit
architecture it's nearly 100 bytes in size. This reduces that by half for the
non-delayable type of event.

cd9ae2b6a7 [PATCH] NFS: Deal with failure of invalidate_inode_pages2()
If invalidate_inode_pages2() fails, then it should in principle just be
because the current process was signalled. In that case, we just want to

Also add a helper to allow the O_DIRECT code to simply mark the page cache as
invalid once it is finished writing, instead of calling

3fcfab16c5 [PATCH] separate bdi congestion functions from queue congestion functions
Separate out the concept of "queue congestion" from "backing-dev congestion".
Congestion is a backing-dev concept, not a queue concept.

The blk_* congestion functions are retained, as wrappers around the core
backing-dev congestion functions.

This proper layering is needed so that NFS can cleanly use the congestion
functions, and so that CONFIG_BLOCK=n actually links.

24e36663c3 [PATCH] knfsd: be more selective in which sockets lockd listens on
Currently lockd listens on UDP always, and TCP if CONFIG_NFSD_TCP is set.

However as lockd performs services of the client as well, this is a problem.
If CONFIG_NfSD_TCP is not set, and a tcp mount is used, the server will not be
able to call back to lockd.

So:
 - add an option to lockd_up saying which protocol is needed
 - Always open sockets for which an explicit port was given, otherwise
only open a socket of the type required
 - Change nfsd to do one lockd_up per socket rather than one per thread.

This
 - removes the dependancy on CONFIG_NFSD_TCP
 - means that lockd may open sockets other than at startup
 - means that lockd will *not* listen on UDP if the only
mounts are TCP mount (and nfsd hasn't started).

The latter is the only one that concerns me at all - I don't know if this
might be a problem with some servers.

9a53c3a783 [PATCH] r/o bind mounts: unlink: monitor i_nlink

fd6840714d NFS: nfs_lookup - don't hash dentry when optimising away the lookup
If the open intents tell us that a given lookup is going to result in a,
exclusive create, we currently optimize away the lookup call itself. The
reason is that the lookup would not be atomic with the create RPC call, so
why do it in the first place?

A problem occurs, however, if the VFS aborts the exclusive create operation
after the lookup, but before the call to create the file/directory: in this
case we will end up with a hashed negative dentry in the dcache that has
never been looked up.
Fix this by only actually hashing the dentry once the create operation has
been successfully completed.

If the LOOKUP or GETATTR in nfs_instantiate fail, nfs_instantiate will do a
d_drop before returning. But some callers already do a d_drop in the case
of an error return. Make certain we do only one d_drop in all error paths.

This issue was introduced because over time, the symlink proc API diverged
slightly from the create/mkdir/mknod proc API. To prevent other coding
mistakes of this type, change the symlink proc API to be more like
create/mkdir/mknod and move the nfs_instantiate call into the symlink proc
routines so it is used in exactly the same way for create, mkdir, mknod,
and symlink.

d3db90e270 NFS: remove a no-longer-needed error check in nfs_symlink()
In the early days of NFS, there was no duplicate reply cache on the server.
Thus retransmitted non-idempotent requests often found that the request had
already completed on the server. To avoid passing an unanticipated return
code to unsuspecting applications, NFS clients would often shunt error
codes that implied the request had been retried but already completed.

Thanks to NFS over TCP, duplicate reply caches on the server, and network
performance and reliability improvements, it is safe to remove such checks.

54ceac4515 NFS: Share NFS superblocks per-protocol per-server per-FSID
The attached patch makes NFS share superblocks between mounts from the same
server and FSID over the same protocol.

It does this by creating each superblock with a false root and returning the
real root dentry in the vfsmount presented by get_sb(). The root dentry set
starts off as an anonymous dentry if we don't already have the dentry for its
inode, otherwise it simply returns the dentry we already have.

We may thus end up with several trees of dentries in the superblock, and if at
some later point one of anonymous tree roots is discovered by normal filesystem
activity to be located in another tree within the superblock, the anonymous
root is named and materialises attached to the second tree at the appropriate
point.

Why do it this way? Why not pass an extra argument to the mount() syscall to
indicate the subpath and then pathwalk from the server root to the desired
directory? You can't guarantee this will work for two reasons:

 (1) The root and intervening nodes may not be accessible to the client.

With NFS2 and NFS3, for instance, mountd is called on the server to get
the filehandle for the tip of a path. mountd won't give us handles for
anything we don't have permission to access, and so we can't set up NFS
inodes for such nodes, and so can't easily set up dentries (we'd have to
     have ghost inodes or something).

With this patch we don't actually create dentries until we get handles
from the server that we can use to set up their inodes, and we don't
actually bind them into the tree until we know for sure where they go.

 (2) Inaccessible symbolic links.

If we're asked to mount two exports from the server, eg:

	mount warthog:/warthog/aaa/xxx /mmm
	mount warthog:/warthog/bbb/yyy /nnn

We may not be able to access anything nearer the root than xxx and yyy,
but we may find out later that /mmm/www/yyy, say, is actually the same
directory as the one mounted on /nnn. What we might then find out, for
example, is that /warthog/bbb was actually a symbolic link to
/warthog/aaa/xxx/www, but we can't actually determine that by talking to
the server until /warthog is made available by NFS.

This would lead to having constructed an errneous dentry tree which we
can't easily fix. We can end up with a dentry marked as a directory when
it should actually be a symlink, or we could end up with an apparently
     hardlinked directory.

With this patch we need not make assumptions about the type of a dentry
for which we can't retrieve information, nor need we assume we know its
place in the grand scheme of things until we actually see that place.

This patch reduces the possibility of aliasing in the inode and page caches for
inodes that may be accessed by more than one NFS export. It also reduces the
number of superblocks required for NFS where there are many NFS exports being
used from a server (home directory server + autofs for example).

This in turn makes it simpler to do local caching of network filesystems, as it
can then be guaranteed that there won't be links from multiple inodes in
separate superblocks to the same cache file.

Obviously, cache aliasing between different levels of NFS protocol could still
be a problem, but at least that gives us another key to use when indexing the
cache.

This patch makes the following changes:

 (1) The server record construction/destruction has been abstracted out into
its own set of functions to make things easier to get right. These have
     been moved into fs/nfs/client.c.

All the code in fs/nfs/client.c has to do with the management of
connections to servers, and doesn't touch superblocks in any way; the
remaining code in fs/nfs/super.c has to do with VFS superblock management.

 (2) The sequence of events undertaken by NFS mount is now reordered:

     (a) A volume representation (struct nfs_server) is allocated.

     (b) A server representation (struct nfs_client) is acquired. This may be
allocated or shared, and is keyed on server address, port and NFS
     	 version.

     (c) If allocated, the client representation is initialised. The state
member variable of nfs_client is used to prevent a race during
     	 initialisation from two mounts.

     (d) For NFS4 a simple pathwalk is performed, walking from FH to FH to find
the root filehandle for the mount (fs/nfs/getroot.c). For NFS2/3 we
are given the root FH in advance.

     (e) The volume FSID is probed for on the root FH.

     (f) The volume representation is initialised from the FSINFO record
     	 retrieved on the root FH.

     (g) sget() is called to acquire a superblock. This may be allocated or
shared, keyed on client pointer and FSID.

     (h) If allocated, the superblock is initialised.

     (i) If the superblock is shared, then the new nfs_server record is
     	 discarded.

     (j) The root dentry for this mount is looked up from the root FH.

     (k) The root dentry for this mount is assigned to the vfsmount.

 (3) nfs_readdir_lookup() creates dentries for each of the entries readdir()
returns; this function now attaches disconnected trees from alternate
roots that happen to be discovered attached to a directory being read (in
the same way nfs_lookup() is made to do for lookup ops).

The new d_materialise_unique() function is now used to do this, thus
permitting the whole thing to be done under one set of locks, and thus
avoiding any race between mount and lookup operations on the same
     directory.

 (4) The client management code uses a new debug facility: NFSDBG_CLIENT which
is set by echoing 1024 to /proc/net/sunrpc/nfs_debug.

 (5) Clone mounts are now called xdev mounts.

 (6) Use the dentry passed to the statfs() op as the handle for retrieving fs
statistics rather than the root dentry of the superblock (which is now a
     dummy).

e9f7bee1df [PATCH] NFS: large non-page-aligned direct I/O clobbers memory
The logic in nfs_direct_read_schedule and nfs_direct_write_schedule can
allow data->npages to be one larger than rpages. This causes a page

Also add a check into the main XDR decode handler to make sure that the amount

fd39fc8561 [PATCH] zoned vm counters: conversion of nr_unstable to per zone counter
Conversion of nr_unstable to a per zone counter

We need to do some special modifications to the nfs code since there are
multiple cases of disposition and we need to have a page ref for proper
accounting.

This converts the last critical page state of the VM and therefore we need to
remove several functions that were depending on GET_PAGE_STATE_LAST in order
to make the kernel compile again. We are only left with event type counters
in page state.

b1e7a8fd85 [PATCH] zoned vm counters: conversion of nr_dirty to per zone counter
This makes nr_dirty a per zone counter. Looping over all processors is
avoided during writeback state determination.

The counter aggregation for nr_dirty had to be undone in the NFS layer since
we summed up the page counts from multiple zones. Someone more familiar with
NFS should probably review what I have done.

266bee8869 [PATCH] fix static linking of NFS
Builds on ARM report link problems with common configurations like
statically linked NFS (for nfsroot). The symptom is that __init
section code references __exit section code; that won't work since
the exit sections are discarded (since they can never be called).

The best fix for these particular cases would be an "__init_or_exit"
section annotation.
