165dc59116 [PATCH] uml: Simplify console opening/closing and irq registration
This patch simplifies the opening and closing of host console devices and the
registration and deregistration of IRQs.  The intent is to make it obvious
that an IRQ can't exist without an open file descriptor.

chan_enable will now open the channel, and when both opening and IRQ
registration are desired, this should be used.  Opening only is done for the
initial console, so that interface still needs to exist.

The free_irqs_later interface is now gone.  It was intended to avoid freeing
an IRQ while it was being processed.  It did this, but it didn't eliminate the
possiblity of free_irq being called from an interrupt, which is bad.  In its
place is a list of irqs to be freed, which is processed by the signal handler
just before exiting.  close_one_chan now disables irqs.

When a host device disappears, it is just closed, and that disables IRQs.

The device id registered with the IRQ is now the chan structure, not the tty.
This is because the interrupt arrives on a descriptor associated with the
channel.  This caused equivalent changes in the arguments to line_timer_cb.
line_disable is gone since it is not used any more.

The count field in the line structure is gone.  tty->count is used instead.

The complicated logic in sigio_handler with freeing IRQs when necessary and
making sure its idea of the next irq is correct is now much simpler.  The irq
list can't be rearranged underneath it, so it is now a simple list walk.

1f80171e81 [PATCH] uml: move console configuration
This patch changes when console devices are configured in order to prepare the
ground for the next patch.

parse_chan_pair is now done earlier, when initcalls are run, rather than when
the device is opened.

When a host device disappears, the channel list is closed, but not freed.
This is required by the previous change.  line_config now takes the options
structure as an argument, and line_open doesn't.

    return(foo); becomes return foo;
    some statements are broken across lines for readability
    some trailing whitespace is cleaned up
    open_one_chan took four arguments, three of which could be
       deduced from the first.  Accordingly, they were eliminated.
    some examples of "} else {" had a newline added
    some whitespace cleanup in the indentation
    lines_init got some control flow cleanup
    some long lines were broken
    removed another emacs-specific C formatting comment

63b4444241 [PATCH] uml: fix compilation with CONFIG_MODE_TT disabled
Fix UML compilation when SKAS mode is disabled. Indeed, we were compiling
SKAS-only object files, which failed due to some SKAS-only headers being
excluded from the search path.

74433c0fe1 [PATCH] Hostfs: update for new glibc - add missing symbol exports
Today, when compiling UML, I got warnings for two used unexported symbols:
readdir64 and truncate64. Indeed, my glibc headers are aliasing readdir to
readdir64 and truncate to truncate64 (and so on).

I'm then adding additional exports. Since I've no idea if the symbols where
always provided in the supported glibc's, I've added weak definitions too.

516949480d [PATCH] uml: fix random segfaults at bootup
Don't use printk() where "current_thread_info()" is crap.

Until when we switch to running on init_stack, current_thread_info() evaluates
to crap. Printk uses "current" at times (in detail, &current is evaluated with
CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK to check the spinlock owner task).

And this leads to random segmentation faults.

Exactly, what happens is that &current = *(current_thread_info()), i.e. round
down $esp and dereference the value. I.e. access the stack below $esp, which
causes SIGSEGV on a VM_GROWSDOWN vma (see arch/i386/mm/fault.c).

With Paolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso <blaisorblade@yahoo.it>

UML skas0 stub has been miscompiling for many people (incidentally not
the authors), depending on the used GCC versions.

I think (and testing on some GCC versions shows) this patch avoids the
fundamental issue which is behind this, namely gcc using the stack when
we have just replaced it, behind gcc's back.  The remapping and storage
of the return value is hidden in a blob of asm, hopefully giving gcc no
room for creativity.

This makes it shut up.

The current UML build assumes that on x86-64 systems, /lib is a symlink
to /lib64, but in some distributions (like PLD and CentOS) they are
separate directories, so the 64 bit library loader isn't found.  This
patch inserts /lib64 at the start of the rpath on x86-64 UML builds.

This patch makes stub_segv use the stub_syscall macros.  This was needed
anyway, but the bug that prompted this was the discovery that gcc was storing
stuff in RCX, which is trashed across a system call.  This is exactly the sort
of problem that the new macros fix.

There is a stub_syscall0 for getpid.  stub_segv was changed to be a libc file,
and that caused some include changes.

e23181deec [PATCH] uml: eliminate anonymous union and clean up symlink lossage
This gives a name to the anonymous union introduced in skas-hold-own-ldt,
allowing to build on a wider range of gccs.

It also removes ldt.h, which somehow became real, and replaces it with a
symlink, and creates ldt-x86_64.h as a copy of ldt-i386.h for now.

39d730ab87 [PATCH] uml: eliminate use of local in clone stub
We have a bug in the i386 stub_syscall6 which pushes ebp before the system
call and pops it afterwards.  Because we use syscall6 to remap the stack, the
old contents of the stack (and the former value of ebp) are no longer
available.  Some versions of gcc make from a real local, accessed through ebp,
despite my efforts to make it obvious that references to from are really
constants.  This patch attempts to make it even more obvious by eliminating
from and using a macro to access the stub's data explicitly with constants.

My original thinking on this was to replace syscall6 with a remap_stack
interface which saved ebp someplace and restored it afterwards.  The problem
is that there are no registers to put it in, except for esp.  That could work,
since we can store a constant in esp after the mmap because we just replaced
the stack.  However, this approach seems a tad cleaner.

7a590611c0 [PATCH] uml: fix access_ok
The access_ok_tt() macro is bogus, in that a read access is unconditionally
considered valid.

I couldn't find in SCM logs the introduction of this check, but I went back to
2.4.20-1um and the definition was the same.

Possibly this was done to avoid problems with missing set_fs() calls, but
there can't be any I think because they would fail with SKAS mode.
TT-specific code is still to check.

Also, this patch joins common code together, and makes the "address range
wrapping" check happen for all cases, rather than for only some.

This may, possibly, be reoptimized at some time, but the current code doesn't
seem clever, just confused.

* Important: I've also had to change references to access_ok_{tt,skas} back to
  access_ok - the kernel wasn't that happy otherwise.

fd9bc53b99 [PATCH] uml console channels: remove console_write wrappers
We were using a long series of (stupid) wrappers which all call
generic_console_write().  Since the wrappers only change the 4th param, which
is unused by the called proc, remove them and call generic_console_write()
directly.

If needed at any time in the future to reintroduce this stuff, the member
could be moved to a generic struct, to avoid this duplicated handling.

printk clears the host errno (I verified this in debugging and it's reasonable
enough, given that it ends via a write call on some fd, especially since
printk() goes on /dev/tty0 which is often the host stdout).  So save errno
earlier.  There's no reason to change the printk calls to use -err rather than
errno - the assignment can't clear errno.

And in the first failure path, we used to return 0 too (and this time more
clearly), which is totally wrong.  0 is a success fd, which is then registered
and gives a "registering fd twice" warning.

Finally, fix up some whitespace.

cbc24afa82 [PATCH] uml: remove bogus WARN_ON, triggerable harmlessly on a page fault race
The below warning was added in place of pte_mkyoung(); if (is_write)
pte_mkdirty();

In fact, if the PTE is not marked young/dirty, our dirty/accessed bit
emulation would cause the TLB permission not to be changed, and so we'd loop,
and given we don't support preemption yet, we'd busy-hang here.

However, I've seen this warning trigger without crashes during a loop of
concurrent kernel builds, at random times (i.e. like a race condition), and I
realized that two concurrent faults on the same page, one on read and one on
write, can trigger it. The read fault gets serviced and the PTE gets marked
writable but clean (it's possible on a shared-writable mapping), while the
generic code sees the PTE was already installed and returns without action. In
this case, we'll see another fault and service it normally.

481bed4542 [PATCH] consolidate sys_ptrace()
The sys_ptrace boilerplate code (everything outside the big switch
statement for the arch-specific requests) is shared by most architectures.
This patch moves it to kernel/ptrace.c and leaves the arch-specific code as
arch_ptrace.

Some architectures have a too different ptrace so we have to exclude them.
They continue to keep their implementations.  For sh64 I had to add a
sh64_ptrace wrapper because it does some initialization on the first call.
For um I removed an ifdefed SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL block, but
SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL isn't defined anywhere in the tree.

26d89d1eef [PATCH] uml: build host-binaries with the native host arch again
This patch reverts back the changes to HOSTCFLAGS and HOSTLDFLAGS

When we were building complete binaries to get constants (such as ptrace
register layout on stack) from host userspace headers, we needed to make the
arch for building HOST binaries match our one: i.e.  on a 64bit system
compiling 32bit binaries, we compile 32-bit hostprogs and need, say, 32-bit
ncurses.  Now we can revert that - that avoids problem with, say, menuconfig
and ncurses, on a system which can't compile well 32-bit programs.

Remove usage of hardcoded constants in paging_init().

By chance I spotted a bug in zones_setup involving a change to ZONE_*
constants, due to the ZONE_DMA32 patch from Andi Kleen (which is in -mm).
So, possibly, instead of zones_size[2] you will find zones_size[3] in the
code, but that change is wrong and this patch is still correct.

 * A new global variable skas_needs_stub is inserted, that
   can be used to decide, whether stub-pages must be supported

0e76422ca5 [PATCH] uml: fix UML network driver endianness bugs
ifa->ifa_address and ifa->ifa_mask are defined as __u32, but used as if they
were char[4].

Network code uses htons() to convert it.  So UML's method to access these
fields is wrong for bigendians (e.g.  s390)

I replaced bytewise copying by memcpy(), maybe even that might be removed, if
ifa->ifa_address/mask may be used immediately.

4f0272415a [PATCH] uml: fix syscall stubs
Jeff Dike noted that the assembly code for syscall stubs is misassembled with
GCC 3.2.3: the values copied in registers weren't preserved between one asm()
and the following one.

So I fixed the thing by rewriting the __asm__ constraints more like unistd.h
ones.

Note: in syscall6 case I had to add one more instruction (i.e.  moving arg6 in
eax and shuffling things around) - it's needed for the function to be valid in
general (we can't load the value from the stack, relative to ebp, because we
change it), but could be avoided since we actually use a constant as param 6.

The only fix would be to turn stub_syscall6 to a macro and use a "i"
constraint for arg6 (i.e., specify it's a constant value).

Make UML share the underlying cpu-specific tuning done on i386.

Actually, for now many config options aren't used a lot - but that can be done
later.  Also, UML relies on GCC optimization for things like memcpy and such
more than i386, so specifying the correct -march and -mtune should be enough.
Later, we may want to correct some other stuff.

For instance, since FPU context switching, for us, is done (at least
partially, i.e.  between our kernelspace and userspace) by the host, we may
allow usage of FPU operations by GCC.  This doesn't hold for kernelspace vs.
kernelspace, but we don't support preemption.

4c21e2f244 [PATCH] mm: split page table lock
Christoph Lameter demonstrated very poor scalability on the SGI 512-way, with
a many-threaded application which concurrently initializes different parts of
a large anonymous area.

This patch corrects that, by using a separate spinlock per page table page, to
guard the page table entries in that page, instead of using the mm's single
page_table_lock.  (But even then, page_table_lock is still used to guard page
table allocation, and anon_vma allocation.)

In this implementation, the spinlock is tucked inside the struct page of the
page table page: with a BUILD_BUG_ON in case it overflows - which it would in
the case of 32-bit PA-RISC with spinlock debugging enabled.

Splitting the lock is not quite for free: another cacheline access.  Ideally,
I suppose we would use split ptlock only for multi-threaded processes on
multi-cpu machines; but deciding that dynamically would have its own costs.
So for now enable it by config, at some number of cpus - since the Kconfig
language doesn't support inequalities, let preprocessor compare that with
NR_CPUS.  But I don't think it's worth being user-configurable: for good
testing of both split and unsplit configs, split now at 4 cpus, and perhaps
change that to 8 later.

There is a benefit even for singly threaded processes: kswapd can be attacking
one part of the mm while another part is busy faulting.

Convert those few architectures which are calling pud_alloc, pmd_alloc,
pte_alloc_map on a user mm, not to take the page_table_lock first, nor drop it
after.  Each of these can continue to use pte_alloc_map, no need to change
over to pte_alloc_map_lock, they're neither racy nor swappable.

In the sparc64 io_remap_pfn_range, flush_tlb_range then falls outside of the
page_table_lock: that's okay, on sparc64 it's like flush_tlb_mm, and that has
always been called from outside of page_table_lock in dup_mmap.

The patch to use host AIO support that I submitted early after 2.6.13 exposed
some problems in the block driver.  I have fixes for these, but am not
comfortable putting them into 2.6.14 at this late date.  So, this patch reverts
the use of host AIO.

I will resubmit the original patch, plus fixes to the driver after 2.6.14
in order to get a reasonable amount of testing before they're exposed to
the general public.

UML/x86_64 doesn't run when built with frame pointers disabled.  There
was an implicit frame pointer assumption in the stub segfault handler.

855ec613ca [PATCH] uml: restore include breakage, breaking binary format of COW driver
Commit 44456d37b5, between 2.6.13-rc3 and -rc4,
was a "nice cleanup" which broke something. Revert the offending part.

It broke because:
a) because this part doesn't fall under the description
b) the author didn't know what he was doing here
c) the author didn't try to compile the existing code and see that it worked
   perfectly.
d) the author didn't ask us what was happening
e) you didn't either, and somebody there should have learned that UML is a bit
   different.

In fact, UML is special in linking to host libc and using its includes.

In particular, since host includes always define both __BIG_ENDIAN and
__LITTLE_ENDIAN, ntohll() macros started thinking to be in a big-endian world;
and on-disk compatibility was broken.

Many thanks go to Nix for reporting the problem and correctly diagnosing an
endianness problem.

Btw, this patch restores the previous code, which worked; but the definitions
would be uncorrect if used in kernelspace files.

Next patch addresses that.

a) sysrq may be run when the scheduler is non-functioning

b) the warning I wanted to fix actually came from the fault handler run in
   atomic context.  But I fixed that not to take the semaphore in a separate
   patch.

c) the fault handler is run because of a fault, and that fault was
   unaffected by this patch.

fac97ae0b1 [PATCH] uml: replace printk with "stack-friendly" printf - to report console failure
User get *a lot* confused when consoles don't work but we don't report
anything.  And, as reported in the comment, using printk to report "your
console doesn't work" isn't likely to go that far.

Fix the problem on the base of this: stack consumption by host printf().  Use
kernel sprintf() and os_write_file, using a wild guess that one page will be
enough for the message, to preallocate the buffer with kmalloc().

setup_initial_poll is only called with sigio_lock() held, so use appropriate
allocation.

Also, parse_chan() can also be called when holding a spinlock (see line_open()
 -> parse_chan_pair()).

I have sporadic problems (spinlock taken twice, with spinlock debugging on UP)
which could be caused by a sequence like "take spinlock, alloc and go to
sleep, take again the spinlock in the other thread".

fea03cb40a [PATCH] uml: avoid fixing faults while atomic
Following i386, we should maybe refuse trying to fault in pages when we're
doing atomic operations, because to handle the fault we could need to take
already taken spinlocks.

Also, if we're doing an atomic operation (in the sense of in_atomic()) we're
surely in kernel mode and we're surely going to handle adequately the failed
fault, so it's safe to behave this way.

Currently, on UML SMP is rarely used, and we don't support PREEMPT, so this is
unlikely to create problems right now, but it might in the future.

Things are breaking horribly with sysrq called in interrupt context.  I want
to try to fix it, but probably this is simpler.  To tell the truth, sysrq is
normally run in interrupt context, so there shouldn't be any problem.

There's also a warning from the fault handler because it's run in atomic
context (I have a patch for that, only I deferred it).  This is why I'm doing
this.

546fe1cbf9 [PATCH] uml: fix hang in TT mode on fault
The current code doesn't handle well general protection faults on the host -
it thinks that cr2 is always the address of a page fault.  While actually, on
general protection faults, that address is not accessible, so we'd better
assume we couldn't satisfy the fault.  Currently instead we think we've fixed
it, so we go back, retry the instruction and fault again endlessly.

This leads to the kernel hanging when doing copy_from_user(dest, -1, ...) in
TT mode, since reading *(-1) causes a GFP, and we don't support kernel
preemption.

Thanks to Luo Xin for testing UML with LTP and reporting the failures he got.

It was so bad that the compile warning I got was "control reaches end of

b4fd310e16 [PATCH] uml: preserve errno in error paths
The poster child for this patch is the third tuntap_user hunk.  When an ioctl
fails, it properly closes the opened file descriptor and returns.  However,
the close resets errno to 0, and the 'return errno' that follows returns 0
rather than the value that ioctl set.  This caused the caller to believe that
the device open succeeded and had opened file descriptor 0, which caused no
end of interesting behavior.

The rest of this patch is a pass through the UML sources looking for places
where errno could be reset before being passed back out.  A common culprit is
printk, which could call write, being called before errno is returned.

In some cases, where the code ends up being much smaller, I just deleted the
printk.

There was another case where a caller of run_helper looked at errno after a
failure, rather than the return value of run_helper, which was the errno value
that it wanted.

3eddddcf23 [PATCH] uml: breakpoint an arbitrary thread
This patch implements a stack trace for a thread, not unlike sysrq-t does.
The advantage to this is that a break point can be placed on showreqs, so that
upon showing the stack, you jump immediately into the debugger.  While sysrq-t
does the same thing, sysrq-t shows *all* threads stacks.  It also doesn't work
right now.  In the future, I thought it might be acceptable to make this show
all pids stacks, but perhaps leaving well enough alone and just using sysrq-t
would be okay.  For now, upon receiving the stack command, UML switches
context to that thread, dumps its registers, and then switches context back to
the original thread.  Since UML compacts all threads into one of 4 host
threads, this sort of mechanism could be expanded in the future to include
other debugging helpers that sysrq does not cover.

Note by jdike - The main benefit to this is that it brings an arbitrary thread
back into context, where it can be examined by gdb.  The fact that it dumps it
stack is secondary.  This provides the capability to examine a sleeping
thread, which has existed in tt mode, but not in skas mode until now.

Also, the other threads, that sysrq doesn't cover, can be gdb-ed directly
anyway.

5bb7826900 kbuild: rename prepare to archprepare to fix dependency chain
When introducing the generic asm-offsets.h support the dependency
chain for the prepare targets was changed. All build scripts expecting
include/asm/asm-offsets.h to be made when using the prepare target would broke.
With the limited number of prepare targets left in arch Makefiles
the trivial solution was to introduce a new arch specific target: archprepare

The dependency chain looks like this now:

prepare
  |
  +--> prepare0
         |
         +--> archprepare
                |
		+--> scripts_basic
                +--> prepare1
                       |
                       +---> prepare2
                               |
                               +--> prepare3

So prepare 3 is processed before prepare2 etc.
This guaantees that the asm symlink, version.h, scripts_basic
are all updated before archprepare is processed.

prepare0 which build the asm-offsets.h file will need the
actions performed by archprepare.

The head target is now named prepare, because users scripts will most
likely use that target, but prepare-all has been kept for compatibility.
Updated Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.txt.

The UML fault handler was recently changed to enforce PROT_NONE protections,
by requiring VM_READ or VM_EXEC on VMA's.

However, by mistake, things were changed such that VM_READ is always checked,
also on write faults; so a VMA mapped with only PROT_WRITE is not readable
(unless it's prefaulted with MAP_POPULATE or with a write), which is different
from i386.

Discovered while testing remap_file_pages protection support.

inlined but rather normal functions.

In other sections of UML code, this is justified by having files which

I've had to turn many of them to macros because of missing declarations. While
doing this, I've decided to reuse some already existing macros.

a7d0c21033 [PATCH] i386 / uml: add dwarf sections to static link script
Inside the linker script, insert the code for DWARF debug info sections. This
may help GDB'ing a Uml binary. Actually, it seems that ld is able to guess
what I added correctly, but normal linker scripts include this section so it
should be correct anyway adding it.

On request by Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org>, I've added it to
asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.s. I've also moved there the stabs debug section,
used the new macro in i386 linker script and added DWARF debug section to
that.

In the truth, I've not been able to verify the difference in GDB behaviour
after this change (I've seen large improvements with another patch). This
may depend on my binutils version, older one may have worse defaults.

f64a227b6b kbuild: um fix so it compile with generic asm-offsets.h support
um has it own set of files for asm-offsets. So for now the
gen-asm-offset macro is just duplicated in the um Makefile.

This may well be the final solution since um is a bit special compared
to other architectures - time will tell.

Also added a dummy arch/um/kernel/asm-offsets.h file to keep kbuild happy.

07bf731e4b [PATCH] uml: skas0 stubs now check system call return values
Change syscall-stub's data to include a "expected retval".

Stub now checks syscalls retval and aborts execution of syscall list, if
retval != expected retval.

run_syscall_stub prints the data of the failed syscall, using the data pointer
and retval written by the stub to the beginning of the stack.

one_syscall_stub is removed, to simplify code, because only some instructions
are saved by one_syscall_stub, no host-syscall.

Using the stub with additional data (modify_ldt via stub)
is prepared also.

This change enables SKAS0/SKAS3 to work with all combinations of /proc/mm and

09ace81c1d [PATCH] uml: add host AIO support to block driver
This adds AIO support to the ubd driver.

The driver breaks a struct request into IO requests to the host, based on the
hardware segments in the request and on any COW blocks covered by the request.

The ubd IO thread is gone, since there is now an equivalent thread in the AIO
module.

There is provision for multiple outstanding requests now.  Requests aren't
retired until all pieces of it have been completed.  The AIO requests have a
shared count, which is decremented as IO operations come in until it reaches
0.  This can be possibly moved to the request struct - haven't looked at this
yet.

c56004901f [PATCH] uml: TLB operation batching
This adds VM op batching to skas0.  Rather than having a context switch to and
from the userspace stub for each address space change, we write a number of
operations to the stub data page and invoke a different stub which loops over
them and executes them all in one go.

The operations are stored as [ system call number, arg1, arg2, ... ] tuples.

The set is terminated by a system call number of 0.  Single operations, i.e.
page faults, are handled in the old way, since that is slightly more
efficient.

For a kernel build, a minority (~1/4) of the operations are part of a set.
These sets averaged ~100 in length, so for this quarter, the context switching
overhead is greatly reduced.

If a SIGWINCH comes in, while winch_thread() isn't waiting in wait(),
winch_thread could miss signals.  It isn't very probable, that anyone will
see this causing trouble, as it would need a very special timing, that a
missed SIGWINCH results in a wrong window size.

So, this is a minor problem.  But why not fix, as it can be done so easy?

69be8f1896 [PATCH] convert signal handling of NODEFER to act like other Unix boxes.
It has been reported that the way Linux handles NODEFER for signals is
not consistent with the way other Unix boxes handle it.  I've written a
program to test the behavior of how this flag affects signals and had
several reports from people who ran this on various Unix boxes,
confirming that Linux seems to be unique on the way this is handled.

The way NODEFER affects signals on other Unix boxes is as follows:

1) If NODEFER is set, other signals in sa_mask are still blocked.

2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal is
still blocked. (Note: this is the behavior of all tested but Linux _and_
NetBSD 2.0 *).

The way NODEFER affects signals on Linux:

1) If NODEFER is set, other signals are _not_ blocked regardless of
sa_mask (Even NetBSD doesn't do this).

2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal being
handled is not blocked.

The patch converts signal handling in all current Linux architectures to
the way most Unix boxes work.

Unix boxes that were tested:  DU4, AIX 5.2, Irix 6.5, NetBSD 2.0, SFU
3.5 on WinXP, AIX 5.3, Mac OSX, and of course Linux 2.6.13-rcX.

* NetBSD was the only other Unix to behave like Linux on point #2. The
main concern was brought up by point #1 which even NetBSD isn't like
Linux.  So with this patch, we leave NetBSD as the lonely one that
behaves differently here with #2.

- copy_from_user() can fail; ->write() must check its return value.

 - severe buffer overruns both in ->read() and ->write() - lseek to the
   end (i.e.  to mmapper_size) and

	if (count + *ppos > mmapper_size)
		count = count + *ppos - mmapper_size;

   will do absolutely nothing.  Then it will call

	copy_to_user(buf,&v_buf[*ppos],count);

   with obvious results (similar for ->write()).

   Fixed by turning read to simple_read_from_buffer() and by doing
   normal limiting of count in ->write().

 - gratitious lock_kernel() in ->mmap() - it's useless there.

 - lots of gratuitous includes.

a502a3593c [PATCH] uml: fix vsyscall brokenness
The #if/#ifdef cleanup exposed a bug in UML's ELF header processing.  With
this bug fixed, UML recognizes the vsyscall info coming from the host.  On
FC4, there is a vsyscall page low in the address space, which UML doesn't
provide.  This causes an infinite page fault loop and a hang on boot.

This patch works around that by making this look like a no-vsyscall system.

Revert the following patch, because of miscompilation problems in different
environments leading to UML not working *at all* in TT mode; it was merged
lately in 2.6 development cycle, a little after being written, and has
caused problems to lots of people; I know it's a bit too long, but it
shouldn't have been merged in first place, so I still apply for inclusion
in the -stable tree.  Anyone using this feature currently is either using
some older kernel (some reports even used 2.6.12-rc4-mm2) or using this
patch, as included in my -bs patchset.

For now there's not yet a fix for this patch, so for now the best thing is
to drop it (which was widely reported to give a working kernel, and as such
was even merged in -stable tree).

"Convert the boot-time host ptrace testing from clone to fork.  They were
essentially doing fork anyway.  This cleans up the code a bit, and makes
valgrind a bit happier about grinding it."

20d0021394 [PATCH] uml: allow building as 32-bit binary on 64bit host
This patch makes the command:

make ARCH=um SUBARCH=i386

work on x86_64 hosts (with support for building 32-bit binaries).  This is
especially needed since 64-bit UMLs don't support 32-bit emulation for guest
binaries, currently.  This has been tested in all possible cases and works.

Only exception is that I've built but not tested a 64-bit binary, because I
hadn't a 64-bit filesystem available.

   into: .remap_data : { arch/um/sys-i386 /unmap_fin.o (.data .bss) }

(because I didn't use ## to join the two tokens), thus stopping linking.  Pass
the whole path from the Makefile as a simple and nice fix.

1feb8d2d73 [PATCH] uml: workaround host bug in "TT mode vs. NPTL link fix"
A big bug has been diagnosed on hosts running the SKAS patch and built with
CONFIG_REGPARM, due to some missing prevent_tail_call().

On these hosts, this workaround is needed to avoid triggering that bug,
because "to" is kept by GCC only in EBX, which is corrupted at the return of
mmap2().

Since to trigger this bug int 0x80 must be used when doing the call, it rarely
manifests itself, so I'd prefer to get this merged to workaround that host
bug, since it should cause no functional change.  Still, you might prefer to
drop it, I'll leave this to you.

This construct is refused by GCC 4, so here's the (corrected) fix.  Thanks to
Russell for noticing a stupid mistake I did when first sending this.

As he noted, the code is largely suboptimal however it currently works, and
will be fixed shortly.  Just read the access_ok check on fp which is NULL, or
the pointer arithmetic below which should be done with a cast to void*:

 		round_down(stack_top - sizeof(struct rt_sigframe), 16) - 8;

The code shows clearly that has been taken from
arch/x86_64/kernel/signal.c:setup_rt_frame(), maybe in a bit of a hurry.

d5950b4355 [NET]: add a top-level Networking menu to *config
Create a new top-level menu named "Networking" thus moving
net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers
menu and up on the top-level where they belong.

To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before
drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been
implemented for all architectures.

Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found
in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25
are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new
networking menu item.

Replace a semaphore (winch_handler_sem) used in atomic code with a
spinlock, and reduces as needed the amount of protected code to the bare
minimum (for instance no kmalloc calls are needed).

This fixes the last problems with spinlocking (in UP mode with DEBUG
options); the semaphore, taken inside spinlocks, caused a "spin_lock was
already locked" warning, without this patch.

9786a8f3cb [PATCH] uml: Proper clone support for skas0
This patch implements the clone-stub mechanism, which allows skas0 to run
with proc_mm==0, even if the clib in UML uses modify_ldt.

Note: There is a bug in skas3.v7 host patch, that avoids UML-skas from
running properly on a SMP-box.  In full skas3, I never really saw problems,
but in skas0 they showed up.

More commentary by jdike - What this patch does is makes sure that the host
parent of each new host process matches the UML parent of the corresponding
UML process.  This ensures that any changed LDTs are inherited.  This is
done by having clone actually called by the UML process from its stub,
rather than by the kernel.  We have special syscall stubs that are loaded
onto the stub code page because that code must be completely
self-contained.  These stubs are given C interfaces, and used like normal C
functions, but there are subtleties.  Principally, we have to be careful
about stack variables in stub_clone_handler after the clone.  The code is
written so that there aren't any - everything boils down to a fixed
address.  If there were any locals, references to them after the clone
would be wrong because the stack just changed.

d67b569f5f [PATCH] uml: skas0 - separate kernel address space on stock hosts
UML has had two modes of operation - an insecure, slow mode (tt mode) in
which the kernel is mapped into every process address space which requires
no host kernel modifications, and a secure, faster mode (skas mode) in
which the UML kernel is in a separate host address space, which requires a
patch to the host kernel.

This patch implements something very close to skas mode for hosts which
don't support skas - I'm calling this skas0.  It provides the security of
the skas host patch, and some of the performance gains.

The two main things that are provided by the skas patch, /proc/mm and
PTRACE_FAULTINFO, are implemented in a way that require no host patch.

For the remote address space changing stuff (mmap, munmap, and mprotect),
we set aside two pages in the process above its stack, one of which
contains a little bit of code which can call mmap et al.

To update the address space, the system call information (system call
number and arguments) are written to the stub page above the code.  The
%esp is set to the beginning of the data, the %eip is set the the start of
the stub, and it repeatedly pops the information into its registers and
makes the system call until it sees a system call number of zero.  This is
to amortize the cost of the context switch across multiple address space
updates.

When the updates are done, it SIGSTOPs itself, and the kernel process
continues what it was doing.

For a PTRACE_FAULTINFO replacement, we set up a SIGSEGV handler in the
child, and let it handle segfaults rather than nullifying them.  The
handler is in the same page as the mmap stub.  The second page is used as
the stack.  The handler reads cr2 and err from the sigcontext, sticks them
at the base of the stack in a faultinfo struct, and SIGSTOPs itself.  The
kernel then reads the faultinfo and handles the fault.

A complication on x86_64 is that this involves resetting the registers to
the segfault values when the process is inside the kill system call.  This
breaks on x86_64 because %rcx will contain %rip because you tell SYSRET
where to return to by putting the value in %rcx.  So, this corrupts $rcx on
return from the segfault.  To work around this, I added an
arch_finish_segv, which on x86 does nothing, but which on x86_64 ptraces
the child back through the sigreturn.  This causes %rcx to be restored by
sigreturn and avoids the corruption.  Ultimately, I think I will replace
this with the trick of having it send itself a blocked signal which will be
unblocked by the sigreturn.  This will allow it to be stopped just after
the sigreturn, and PTRACE_SYSCALLed without all the back-and-forth of
PTRACE_SYSCALLing it through sigreturn.

This runs on a stock host, so theoretically (and hopefully), tt mode isn't
needed any more.  We need to make sure that this is better in every way
than tt mode, though.  I'm concerned about the speed of address space
updates and page fault handling, since they involve extra round-trips to
the child.  We can amortize the round-trip cost for large address space
updates by writing all of the operations to the data page and having the
child execute them all at the same time.  This will help fork and exec, but
not page faults, since they involve only one page.

I can't think of any way to help page faults, except to add something like
PTRACE_FAULTINFO to the host.  There is PTRACE_SIGINFO, but UML doesn't use
siginfo for SIGSEGV (or anything else) because there isn't enough
information in the siginfo struct to handle page faults (the faulting
operation type is missing).  Adding that would make PTRACE_SIGINFO a usable
equivalent to PTRACE_FAULTINFO.

As for the code itself:

- The system call stub is in arch/um/kernel/sys-$(SUBARCH)/stub.S.  It is
  put in its own section of the binary along with stub_segv_handler in
  arch/um/kernel/skas/process.c.  This is manipulated with run_syscall_stub
  in arch/um/kernel/skas/mem_user.c.  syscall_stub will execute any system
  call at all, but it's only used for mmap, munmap, and mprotect.

- The x86_64 stub calls sigreturn by hand rather than allowing the normal
  sigreturn to happen, because the normal sigreturn is a SA_RESTORER in
  UML's address space provided by libc.  Needless to say, this is not
  available in the child's address space.  Also, it does a couple of odd
  pops before that which restore the stack to the state it was in at the
  time the signal handler was called.

- There is a new field in the arch mmu_context, which is now a union.
  This is the pid to be manipulated rather than the /proc/mm file
  descriptor.  Code which deals with this now checks proc_mm to see whether
  it should use the usual skas code or the new code.

- userspace_tramp is now used to create a new host process for every UML
  process, rather than one per UML processor.  It checks proc_mm and
  ptrace_faultinfo to decide whether to map in the pages above its stack.

- start_userspace now makes CLONE_VM conditional on proc_mm since we need
  separate address spaces now.

- switch_mm_skas now just sets userspace_pid[0] to the new pid rather
  than PTRACE_SWITCH_MM.  There is an addition to userspace which updates
  its idea of the pid being manipulated each time around the loop.  This is
  important on exec, when the pid will change underneath userspace().

- The stub page has a pte, but it can't be mapped in using tlb_flush
  because it is part of tlb_flush.  This is why it's required for it to be
  mapped in by userspace_tramp.

Other random things:

- The stub section in uml.lds.S is page aligned.  This page is written
  out to the backing vm file in setup_physmem because it is mapped from
  there into user processes.

- There's some confusion with TASK_SIZE now that there are a couple of
  extra pages that the process can't use.  TASK_SIZE is considered by the
  elf code to be the usable process memory, which is reasonable, so it is
  decreased by two pages.  This confuses the definition of
  USER_PGDS_IN_LAST_PML4, making it too small because of the rounding down
  of the uneven division.  So we round it to the nearest PGDIR_SIZE rather
  than the lower one.

- I added a missing PT_SYSCALL_ARG6_OFFSET macro.

- um_mmu.h was made into a userspace-usable file.

- proc_mm and ptrace_faultinfo are globals which say whether the host
  supports these features.

- There is a bad interaction between the mm.nr_ptes check at the end of
  exit_mmap, stack randomization, and skas0.  exit_mmap will stop freeing
  pages at the PGDIR_SIZE boundary after the last vma.  If the stack isn't
  on the last page table page, the last pte page won't be freed, as it
  should be since the stub ptes are there, and exit_mmap will BUG because
  there is an unfreed page.  To get around this, TASK_SIZE is set to the
  next lowest PGDIR_SIZE boundary and mm->nr_ptes is decremented after the
  calls to init_stub_pte.  This ensures that we know the process stack (and
  all other process mappings) will be below the top page table page, and
  thus we know that mm->nr_ptes will be one too many, and can be
  decremented.

Things that need fixing:

- We may need better assurrences that the stub code is PIC.

- The stub pte is set up in init_new_context_skas.

- alloc_pgdir is probably the right place.

kmalloc wasn't being disabled during panic.  This patch ensures that, no
matter how UML is exiting, it is disabled.  This matters because part of the
cleanup is to remove the umid file, which involves readdir, which calls
malloc.  This must map to libc malloc, rather than kmalloc or vmalloc.

a6f4e3cf75 [PATCH] uml: fix timer initialization
In skas mode, the call to uml_idle_timer permanently shut off the virtual
timer, resulting in no timer ticks to anything but the idle thread.  This is
likely the cause of the soft lockups that are seen sporadically in recent
UMLs.

Fix the do_fork calling convention: normal arch pass the regs and the new sp
value to do_fork instead of NULL.

Currently the arch-independent code ignores these values, while the UML code
(actually it's copy_thread) gets the right values by itself.

3f22ab276b [PATCH] make each arch use mm/Kconfig
For all architectures, this just means that you'll see a "Memory Model"
choice in your architecture menu.  For those that implement DISCONTIGMEM,
you may eventually want to make your ARCH_DISCONTIGMEM_ENABLE a "def_bool
y" and make your users select DISCONTIGMEM right out of the new choice
menu.  The only disadvantage might be if you have some specific things that
you need in your help option to explain something about DISCONTIGMEM.

60b2737de1 [PATCH] uml: fix linkage of tt mode against NPTL
With Al Viro <viro@parcelfarce.linux.theplanet.co.uk>

To make sure switcheroo() can execute when we remap all the executable
image, we used a trick to make it use a local copy of errno...  this trick
does not work with NPTL glibc, only with LinuxThreads, so use another
(simpler) one to make it work anyway.

Hopefully, a lot improved thanks to merging with the version of Al Viro
(which had his part of problems, though, i.e.  removing a fix to another
bug and not fixing the problem on i386).

Currently UML must explicitly call the UML-specific
free_irq_by_irq_and_dev() for each free_irq call it's done.

This is needed because ->shutdown and/or ->disable are only called when the
last "action" for that irq is removed.

Instead, for UML shared IRQs (UML IRQs are very often, if not always,
shared), for each dev_id some setup is done, which must be cleared on the
release of that fd.  For instance, for each open console a new instance
(i.e.  new dev_id) of the same IRQ is requested().

Exactly, a fd is stored in an array (pollfds), which is after read by a
host thread and passed to poll().  Each event registered by poll() triggers
an interrupt.  So, for each free_irq() we must remove the corresponding
host fd from the table, which we do via this -release() method.

In this patch we add an appropriate hook for this, and remove all uses of
it by pointing the hook to the said procedure; this is safe to do since the
said procedure.

Also some cosmetic improvements are included.

This is heavily based on some work by Chris Wedgwood, which however didn't
get the patch merged for something I'd call a "misunderstanding" (the need
for this patch wasn't cleanly explained, thus adding the generic hook was
felt as undesirable).

501cb02b43 [PATCH] uml: fix strace -f
It turns out that we need to check for pending signals when a newly forked
process is run for the first time.  With strace -f, strace needs to know about
the forked process before it gets going.  If it doesn't, then it ptraces some
bogus values into its registers, and the process segfaults.  So, I added calls
to interrupt_end, which does that, plus checks for reschedules.  There
shouldn't be any of those, but x86 does the same thing, so I'm copying that
behavior to be safe.
