Currently, SATA softresets should do link onlineness check before

This patch moves onlineness check in softreset to ata_eh_reset() and
ata_eh_followup_srst_needed() to clean up code and help future sata_mv
changes which need clear separation between SCR and TF accesses.
sata_fsl is peculiar in that its softreset really isn't softreset but
combination of hardreset and softreset. This patch adds dummy private

implement separate hard and soft resets and return -EAGAIN from
hardreset if it should be follwed by softreset.

Make PMP support optional by adding CONFIG_SATA_PMP and leaving out
libata-pmp.c if it isn't set. PMP helpers return constant values if
PMP support is not enabled and PMP declarations alias non-PMP
counterparts. This makes the compiler to leave out PMP related part
out and LLDs to use non-PMP counterparts automatically.

Implement helpers to test whether PMP is supported, attached and
determine pmp number to use when issuing SRST to a link. While at it,
move ata_is_host_link() so that it's together with the two new PMP
helpers.
This change simplifies LLDs and helps making PMP support optional.

libata-core.c are sata_pmp_port_ops and EXPORTs. Move them to
libata-pmp.c. Also, collect PMP related prototypes and declarations
in header files and move them right above of SFF stuff.
This change is to make PMP support optional.

Now that SFF support is completely separated out from the core layer,
it can be made optional. Add CONFIG_ATA_SFF and let SFF drivers

and data structures for SFF support are disabled. This saves good
number of bytes for small systems.

Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>
Now that all SFF stuff is separated out of core layer, core layer
doesn't call ops->tf_read directly. It gets called only via
ops->qc_fill_rtf() for non-SFF drivers. This patch directly
implements private ops->qc_fill_rtf() for non-SFF controllers and kill
ops->tf_read().
This is much cleaner for non-SFF controllers as some of them have to
cache SFF register values in private data structure and report the
cached values via ops->tf_read(). Also, ops->tf_read() gets nasty for
controllers which don't have clear notion of TF registers when
operation is not in progress.
As this change makes default ops->qc_fill_rtf unnecessary, move
ata_sff_qc_fill_rtf() form ata_base_port_ops to ata_sff_port_ops where
it belongs.
Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>
ata_qc_complete_multiple() took @finish_qc and called it on every qc
before completing it. This was to give opportunity to update TF cache
before ata_qc_complete() tries to fill result_tf. Now that result TF
is a separate operation, this is no longer necessary.
Update sata_sil24, which was the only user of this mechanism, such
that it implements its own ops->qc_fill_rtf() and drop @finish_qc from
ata_qc_complete_multiple().
Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>
On command completion, ata_qc_complete() directly called ops->tf_read
to fill qc->result_tf. This patch adds ops->qc_fill_rtf to replace
hardcoded ops->tf_read usage.
ata_sff_qc_fill_rtf() which uses ops->tf_read to fill result_tf is
implemented and set in ata_base_port_ops and other ops tables which
don't inherit from ata_base_port_ops, so this patch doesn't introduce
any behavior change.
ops->qc_fill_rtf() is similar to ops->sff_tf_read() but can only be
called when a command finishes. As some non-SFF controllers don't
have TF registers defined unless they're associated with in-flight
commands, this limited operation makes life easier for those drivers
and help lifting SFF assumptions from libata core layer.

Previously, there were two ways to trigger follow-up SRST from
hardreset method - returning -EAGAIN and leaving all device classes
unmodified. Drivers never used the latter mechanism and the only use
case for the former was when hardreset couldn't classify.
Drop the latter mechanism and let -EAGAIN mean "perform follow-up SRST
if classification is required". This change removes unnecessary
follow-up SRSTs and simplifies reset implementations.

If PMP fan-out reset fails and SCR isn't accessible, PMP should be
reset. This used to be tested by sata_pmp_std_hardreset() and
communicated to EH by -ERESTART. However, this logic is generic and
doesn't really have much to do with specific hardreset implementation.
This patch moves SCR access failure detection logic to ata_eh_reset()
where it belongs. As this makes sata_pmp_std_hardreset() identical to
sata_std_hardreset(), the function is killed and replaced with the
standard method.

SError used to be cleared in ->postreset. This has small hotplug race
condition. If a device is plugged in after reset is complete but
postreset hasn't run yet, its hotplug event gets lost when SError is
cleared. This patch makes sata_link_resume() clear SError. This
kills the race condition and makes a lot of sense as some PMP and host
PHYs don't work properly without SError cleared.
This change makes sata_pmp_std_{pre|post}_reset()'s unnecessary as
they become identical to ata_std counterparts. It also simplifies
sata_pmp_hardreset() and ahci_vt8251_hardreset().
Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>
Implement sata_std_hardreset(), which simply wraps around
sata_link_hardreset(). sata_std_hardreset() becomes new standard
hardreset method for sata_port_ops and sata_sff_hardreset() moves from
ata_base_port_ops to ata_sff_port_ops, which is where it really
belongs.
ata_is_builtin_hardreset() is added so that both
ata_std_error_handler() and ata_sff_error_handler() skip both builtin
hardresets if SCR isn't accessible.
piix_sidpr_hardreset() in ata_piix.c is identical to
sata_std_hardreset() in functionality and got replaced with the

sata_sff_hardreset() contains link readiness wait logic which isn't
SFF specific. Move that part into sata_link_hardreset(), which now
takes two more parameters - @online and @check_ready. Both are
optional. The former is out parameter for link onlineness after
reset. The latter is used to wait for link readiness after hardreset.
Users of sata_link_hardreset() is updated to use new funtionality and
ahci_hardreset() is updated to use sata_link_hardreset() instead of
sata_sff_hardreset(). This doesn't really cause any behavior change.

Implement ahci_check_ready() and replace ata_sff_wait_after_reset()

Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>
Factor out waiting logic (which is common to all ATA controllers) from
ata_sff_wait_ready() into ata_wait_ready(). ata_wait_ready() takes
@check_ready function pointer and uses it to poll for readiness. This
allows non-SFF controllers to use ata_wait_ready() to wait for link
readiness.
This patch also implements ata_wait_after_reset() - generic version of
ata_sff_wait_after_reset() - using ata_wait_ready().
ata_sff_wait_ready() is reimplemented using ata_wait_ready() and
ata_sff_check_ready(). Functionality remains the same.
Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>
Previously, post-softreset readiness is waited as follows.
1. ata_sff_wait_after_reset() waits for 150ms and then for
ATA_TMOUT_FF_WAIT if status is 0xff and other conditions meet.
2. ata_bus_softreset() finishes with -ENODEV if status is still 0xff.
If not, continue to #3.
3. ata_bus_post_reset() waits readiness of dev0 and/or dev1 depending
on devmask using ata_sff_wait_ready().
And for post-hardreset readiness,
1. ata_sff_wait_after_reset() waits for 150ms and then for
ATA_TMOUT_FF_WAIT if status is 0xff and other conditions meet.
2. sata_sff_hardreset waits for device readiness using
ata_sff_wait_ready().
This patch merges and unifies post-reset readiness waits into
ata_sff_wait_ready() and ata_sff_wait_after_reset().
ATA_TMOUT_FF_WAIT handling is merged into ata_sff_wait_ready(). If TF
status is 0xff, link status is unknown and the port is SATA, it will
continue polling till ATA_TMOUT_FF_WAIT.
ata_sff_wait_after_reset() is updated to perform the following steps.
1. waits for 150ms.
2. waits for dev0 readiness using ata_sff_wait_ready(). Note that
this is done regardless of devmask, as ata_sff_wait_ready() handles
0xff status correctly, this preserves the original behavior except
that it may wait longer after softreset if link is online but
status is 0xff. This behavior change is very unlikely to cause any
actual difference and is intended. It brings softreset behavior to
that of hardreset.
3. waits for dev1 readiness just the same way ata_bus_post_reset() did.
Now both soft and hard resets call ata_sff_wait_after_reset() after
reset to wait for readiness after resets. As
ata_sff_wait_after_reset() contains calls to ->sff_dev_select(),
explicit call near the end of sata_sff_hardreset() is removed.
This change makes reset implementation simpler and more consistent.
While at it, make the magical 150ms wait post-reset wait duration a
constant and ata_sff_wait_ready() and ata_sff_wait_after_reset() take
@link instead of @ap. This is to make them consistent with other
reset helpers and ease core changes.
pata_scc is updated accordingly.

ata_std_postreset() and implement ata_sff_postreset() using the std
version.

ata_sff_port_ops overrides it to ata_sff_postreset().
This change affects pdc_adma, ahci, sata_fsl and sata_sil24. pdc_adma
now specifies postreset to ata_sff_postreset() explicitly. sata_fsl
and sata_sil24 now use ata_std_postreset() which makes no difference
to them. ahci now calls ata_std_postreset() from its own postreset
method, which causes no behavior difference.

Separate out generic ATA portion from ata_sff_prereset() into
ata_std_prereset() and implement ata_sff_prereset() using the std
version. Waiting for device readiness is the only SFF specific part.
ata_base_port_ops now has ata_std_prereset() for its prereset and
ata_sff_port_ops overrides it to ata_sff_prereset(). This change can
affect pdc_adma, ahci, sata_fsl and sata_sil24. pdc_adma implements
its own prereset using ata_sff_prereset() and the rest has hardreset
and thus are unaffected by this change.
This change reflects real world situation. There is no generic way to
wait for device readiness for non-SFF controllers and some of them
don't have any mechanism for that. Non-sff drivers which don't have
hardreset should wrap ata_std_prereset() and wait for device readiness
itself but there's no such driver now and isn't likely to be popular
in the future either.

Currently reset methods are not specified directly in the
ata_port_operations table. If a LLD wants to use custom reset
methods, it should construct and use a error_handler which uses those
reset methods. It's done this way for two reasons.
First, the ops table already contained too many methods and adding
four more of them would noticeably increase the amount of necessary
boilerplate code all over low level drivers.
Second, as ->error_handler uses those reset methods, it can get
confusing. ie. By overriding ->error_handler, those reset ops can be
made useless making layering a bit hazy.
Now that ops table uses inheritance, the first problem doesn't exist
anymore. The second isn't completely solved but is relieved by
providing default values - most drivers can just override what it has
implemented and don't have to concern itself about higher level
callbacks. In fact, there currently is no driver which actually
modifies error handling behavior. Drivers which override
->error_handler just wraps the standard error handler only to prepare
the controller for EH. I don't think making ops layering strict has
any noticeable benefit.
This patch makes ->prereset, ->softreset, ->hardreset, ->postreset and
their PMP counterparts propoer ops. Default ops are provided in the
base ops tables and drivers are converted to override individual reset
methods instead of creating custom error_handler.
* ata_std_error_handler() doesn't use sata_std_hardreset() if SCRs
aren't accessible. sata_promise doesn't need to use separate
error_handlers for PATA and SATA anymore.
* softreset is broken for sata_inic162x and sata_sx4. As libata now
always prefers hardreset, this doesn't really matter but the ops are
forced to NULL using ATA_OP_NULL for documentation purpose.
* pata_hpt374 needs to use different prereset for the first and second
PCI functions. This used to be done by branching from
hpt374_error_handler(). The proper way to do this is to use
separate ops and port_info tables for each function. Converted.

only of interest to the LLD during initialization. This is confusing
and has caused several drivers to have duplicate unused initializers
for these fields.
Currently only sata_nv uses these fields. Make sata_nv use
->private_data, which is supposed to carry LLD-specific information,
instead and kill ->sht and ->irq_handler. nv_pi_priv structure is
defined and struct literals are used to initialize private_data.
Notational overhead is negligible.

port_info->private_data is currently used for two purposes - to record
private data about the port_info or to specify host->private_data to
use when allocating ata_host.
This overloading is confusing and counter-intuitive in that
port_info->private_data becomes host->private_data instead of
port->private_data. In addition, port_info and host don't correspond
to each other 1-to-1. Currently, the first non-NULL
port_info->private_data is used.
This patch makes port_info->private_data just be what it is -
private_data for the port_info where LLD can jot down extra info.
libata no longer sets host->private_data to the first non-NULL
port_info->private_data, @host_priv argument is added to
ata_pci_init_one() instead. LLDs which use ata_pci_init_one() can use
this argument to pass in pointer to host private data. LLDs which
don't should use init-register model anyway and can initialize
host->private_data directly.
Adding @host_priv instead of using init-register model for LLDs which
use ata_pci_init_one() is suggested by Alan Cox.

ata_pci_init_one() is the only function which uses ops->irq_handler
and pi->sht. Other initialization functions take the same information
as arguments. This causes confusion and duplicate unused entries in
structures.
Make ata_pci_init_one() take sht as an argument and use ata_interrupt
implicitly. All current users use ata_interrupt and if different irq
handler is necessary open coding ata_pci_init_one() using
ata_prepare_sff_host() and ata_activate_sff_host can be done under ten
lines including error handling and driver which requires custom
interrupt handler is likely to require custom initialization anyway.
As ata_pci_init_one() was the last user of ops->irq_handler, this
patch also kills the field.

libata lets low level drivers build ata_port_operations table and
register it with libata core layer. This allows low level drivers
high level of flexibility but also burdens them with lots of
boilerplate entries.
This becomes worse for drivers which support related similar
controllers which differ slightly. They share most of the operations
except for a few. However, the driver still needs to list all
operations for each variant. This results in large number of
duplicate entries, which is not only inefficient but also error-prone
as it becomes very difficult to tell what the actual differences are.
This duplicate boilerplates all over the low level drivers also make
updating the core layer exteremely difficult and error-prone. When
compounded with multi-branched development model, it ends up
accumulating inconsistencies over time. Some of those inconsistencies
cause immediate problems and fixed. Others just remain there dormant
making maintenance increasingly difficult.
To rectify the problem, this patch implements ata_port_operations
inheritance. To allow LLDs to easily re-use their own ops tables
overriding only specific methods, this patch implements poor man's
class inheritance. An ops table has ->inherits field which can be set
to any ops table as long as it doesn't create a loop. When the host
is started, the inheritance chain is followed and any operation which
isn't specified is taken from the nearest ancestor which has it
specified. This operation is called finalization and done only once
per an ops table and the LLD doesn't have to do anything special about
it other than making the ops table non-const such that libata can
update it.
libata provides four base ops tables lower drivers can inherit from -
base, sata, pmp, sff and bmdma. To avoid overriding these ops
accidentaly, these ops are declared const and LLDs should always
inherit these instead of using them directly.
After finalization, all the ops table are identical before and after
the patch except for setting .irq_handler to ata_interrupt in drivers
which didn't use to. The .irq_handler doesn't have any actual effect
and the field will soon be removed by later patch.
* sata_sx4 is still using old style EH and currently doesn't take
advantage of ops inheritance.

libata lets low level drivers build scsi_host_template and register it
to the SCSI layer. This allows low level drivers high level of
flexibility but also burdens them with lots of boilerplate entries.
This patch implements SHT initializers which can be used to initialize
all the boilerplate entries in a sht. Three variants of them are

after the helper macro.

->irq_clear() is used to clear IRQ bit of a SFF controller and isn't
useful for drivers which don't use libata SFF HSM implementation.
However, it's a required callback and many drivers implement their own
noop version as placeholder. This patch implements ata_noop_irq_clear
and use it to replace those custom placeholders.
Also, SFF drivers which don't support BMDMA don't need to use
ata_bmdma_irq_clear(). It becomes noop if BMDMA address isn't
initialized. Convert them to use ata_noop_irq_clear().

PCI device should be powered up or powered up before its PCI regsiters
are accessed. Although PCI configuration register access is allowed
in D3hot, PCI device is free to reset its status when transiting from
D3hot to D0 causing configuration data to change.
Many libata SFF drivers which use ata_pci_init_one() read and update
configuration registers before calling ata_pci_init_one() which
enables the PCI device. Also, in resume paths, some drivers access
registers without resuming the PCI device.
This patch adds a call to pcim_enable_device() in init path if

ata_ehi_schedule_probe() was created to hide details of link-resuming
reset magic. Now that all the softreset workarounds are gone,
scheduling probe is very simple - set probe_mask and request RESET.
Kill ata_ehi_schedule_probe() and open code it. This also increases
consistency as ata_ehi_schedule_probe() couldn't cover individual
device probings so they were open-coded even when the helper existed.
While at it, define ATA_ALL_DEVICES as mask of all possible devices on
a link and always use it when requesting probe on link level for
simplicity and consistency. Setting extra bits in the probe_mask

Some controllers can't reliably record the initial D2H FIS after SATA
link is brought online for whatever reason. Advanced controllers
which don't have traditional TF register based interface often have
this problem as they don't really have the TF registers to update
while the controller and link are being initialized.
SKIP_D2H_BSY works around the problem by skipping the wait for device
readiness before issuing SRST, so for such controllers libata issues
SRST blindly and hopes for the best.
Now that libata defaults to hardreset, this workaround is no longer
necessary. For controllers which have support for hardreset, SRST is
never issued by itself. It is only issued as follow-up SRST for
device classification and PMP initialization, so there's no need to
wait for it from prereset.

ATA_EHI_RESUME_LINK has two functions - promote reset to hardreset if
ATA_LFLAG_HRST_TO_RESUME is set and preventing EH from shortcutting
reset action when probing is requested. The former is gone now and
the latter can easily be achieved by making EH to perform at least one
reset if reset is requested, which also makes more sense than
depending on RESUME_LINK flag.
As ATA_EHI_RESUME_LINK was the only EHI reset modifier, this also
kills reset modifier handling.

When both soft and hard resets are available, libata preferred
softreset till now. The logic behind it was to be softer to devices;
however, this doesn't really help much. Rationales for the change:
* BIOS may freeze lock certain things during boot and softreset can't
unlock those. This by itself is okay but during operation PHY event
or other error conditions can trigger hardreset and the device may
end up with different configuration.
For example, after a hardreset, previously unlockable HPA can be
unlocked resulting in different device size and thus revalidation
failure. Similar condition can occur during or after resume.
* Certain ATAPI devices require hardreset to recover after certain
error conditions. On PATA, this is done by issuing the DEVICE RESET
command. On SATA, COMRESET has equivalent effect. The problem is
that DEVICE RESET needs its own execution protocol.
For SFF controllers with bare TF access, it can be easily
implemented but more advanced controllers (e.g. ahci and sata_sil24)
require specialized implementations. Simply using hardreset solves
the problem nicely.
* COMRESET initialization sequence is the norm in SATA land and many
SATA devices don't work properly if only SRST is used. For example,
some PMPs behave this way and libata works around by always issuing
hardreset if the host supports PMP.
Like the above example, libata has developed a number of mechanisms
aiming to promote softreset to hardreset if softreset is not going
to work. This approach is time consuming and error prone.
Also, note that, dependingon how you read the specs, it could be
argued that PMP fan-out ports require COMRESET to start operation.
In fact, all the PMPs on the market except one don't work properly
if COMRESET is not issued to fan-out ports after PMP reset.
* COMRESET is an integral part of SATA connection and any working
device should be able to handle COMRESET properly. After all, it's
the way to signal hardreset during reboot. This is the most used
and recommended (at least by the ahci spec) method of resetting
devices.
So, this patch makes libata prefer hardreset over softreset by making
the following changes.
* Rename ATA_EH_RESET_MASK to ATA_EH_RESET and use it whereever
ATA_EH_{SOFT|HARD}RESET used to be used. ATA_EH_{SOFT|HARD}RESET is
now only used to tell prereset whether soft or hard reset will be
issued.
* Strip out now unneeded promote-to-hardreset logics from
ata_eh_reset(), ata_std_prereset(), sata_pmp_std_prereset() and
other places.

A Promise SATA controller will signal hotplug events when a hard
reset (COMRESET) is done on a port. These events aren't masked by
the driver, and the unexpected interrupts will cause a sequence
of failed reset attempts util libata's EH finally gives up.
This has not been a common problem so far, but the pending libata
hardreset-by-default changes makes it a critical issue.
The solution is to disable hotplug events before a reset, and to
reenable them afterwards. (Promise's driver does this too.)
This patch adds SATA-specific versions of ->freeze() and ->thaw()
that also disable and enable hotplug events. PATA ports continue
to use the old versions of ->freeze() and ->thaw().
Accesses to the hotplug register must be serialised via host->lock.
We rely on ap->lock == &ap->host->lock and that libata takes this
lock before ->freeze() and ->thaw(). Document this requirement.
The interrupt handler is adjusted so its hotplug register accesses
are inside the region protected by host->lock.
Tested on various chips (SATA300TX4, SATA300TX2plus, SATAII150TX4,
FastTrack TX4000) with various combinations of SATA and PATA disks,
with and without the pending hardreset-by-default changes.

This behavior has been confirmed by Marvell with a SATA analyzer.
The Marvell port-multiplier apparently likes to see clean HOB
information when accessing PMP registers.
Since sata_mv uses PIO shadow register access, this doesn't happen
automatically, as it might in a more purely FIS-based driver (eg. ahci).
One way to fix this is to flag these commands with ATA_TFLAG_LBA48,
forcing libata to write out the HOB fields with known (zero) values.

Back in 2.6.17-rc2, a libata module parameter was added for atapi_dmadir.
That's nice, but most SATA devices which need it will tell us about it
in their IDENTIFY PACKET response, as bit-15 of word-62 of the
returned data (as per ATA7, ATA8 specifications).
So for those which specify it, we should automatically use the DMADIR bit.
Otherwise, disc writing will fail by default on many SATA-ATAPI drives.
This patch adds ATA_DFLAG_DMADIR and make ata_dev_configure() set it
if atapi_dmadir is set or identify data indicates DMADIR is necessary.
atapi_xlat() is converted to check ATA_DFLAG_DMADIR before setting
DMADIR.

During the last step of hibernation in the "platform" mode (with the
help of ACPI) we use the suspend code, including the devices'
->suspend() methods, to prepare the system for entering the ACPI S4
system sleep state.
But at least for some devices the operations performed by the
->suspend() callback in that case must be different from its operations
during regular suspend.
For this reason, introduce the new PM event type PM_EVENT_HIBERNATE and
pass it to the device drivers' ->suspend() methods during the last phase
of hibernation, so that they can distinguish this case and handle it as
appropriate. Modify the drivers that handle PM_EVENT_SUSPEND in a
special way and need to handle PM_EVENT_HIBERNATE in the same way.
These changes are necessary to fix a hibernation regression related
to the i915 driver (ref. http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/2/22/488).

This just updates the libata slave configure routine to take advantage
of the block layer drain buffers. It also adjusts the size lengths in
the atapi code to add the drain buffer to the DMA length so the driver
knows it can rely on it.
I suspect I should also be checking for AHCI as well as ATA_DEV_ATAPI,
but I couldn't see how to do that easily.

that provided by the block layer
ATA requires that all DMA transfers begin and end on word boundaries.
Because of this, a large amount of machinery grew up in ide to adjust
scatterlists on this basis. However, as of 2.5, the block layer has a
dma_alignment variable which ensures both the beginning and length of a
DMA transfer are aligned on the dma_alignment boundary. Although the
block layer does adjust the beginning of the transfer to ensure this
happens, it doesn't actually adjust the length, it merely makes sure
that space is allocated for transfers beyond the declared length. The
upshot of this is that scatterlists may be padded to any size between
the actual length and the length adjusted to the dma_alignment safely
knowing that memory is allocated in this region.
Right at the moment, SCSI takes the default dma_aligment which is on a
512 byte boundary. Note that this aligment only applies to transfers
coming in from user space. However, since all kernel allocations are
automatically aligned on a minimum of 32 byte boundaries, it is safe to
adjust them in this manner as well.
tj: * Adjusting sg after padding is done in block layer. Make libata
set queue alignment correctly for ATAPI devices and drop broken
sg mangling from ata_sg_setup().
* Use request->raw_data_len for ATAPI transfer chunk size.
* Killed qc->raw_nbytes.

For misc ATAPI commands which transfer variable length data to the

overflows can be ignored safely as long as overflow data is properly
drained. libata HSM implementation has this implemented in

further improvements. Improve drain logic such that...
* Report overflow errors using ehi desc mechanism instead of printing
directly.

This fixes some problems with ATAPI devices on nForce4 controllers in ADMA mode
on systems with memory located above 4GB. We need to delay setting the 64-bit
DMA mask until the PRD table and padding buffer are allocated so that they don't
get allocated above 4GB and break legacy mode (which is needed for ATAPI
devices). Also, if either port is in ATAPI mode we need to set the DMA mask
for the PCI device to 32-bit to ensure that the IOMMU code properly bounces
requests above 4GB, as it appears setting the bounce limit does not guarantee
that we will not try to map requests above this point.

AHCI uses CAP.NP to indicate the number of ports and PI to tell which
ports are enabled. The only requirement is that the number of ports
indicated by CAP.NP should equal or be higher than the number of
enabled ports in PI.
CAP.NP and PI carry duplicate information and there have been some
interesting cases. Some early AHCI controllers didn't set PI at all
and just implement from port 0 to CAP.NP. An ICH8 board which wired
four out of six available ports had 3 (4 ports) for CAP.NP and 0x33
for PI. While ESB2 has less bits set in PI than the value in CAP.NP.
Till now, ahci driver assumed that PI is invalid if it doesn't match
CAP.NP exactly. This violates AHCI standard and the driver ends up
accessing unmimplemented ports on ESB2.
This patch updates CAP.NP and PI handling such that PI can have less
number of bits set than indicated in CAP.NP and the highest port is
determined as the maximum port of what CAP.NP and PI indicate.

This patch is based on an original patch from Kuan Luo of NVIDIA,
posted under subject "fixed a bug of adma in rhel4u5 with HDS7250SASUN500G".
His description follows. I've reworked it a bit to avoid some unnecessary
repeated checks but it should be functionally identical.
"The patch is to solve the error message "ata1: CPB flags CMD err,
flags=0x11" when testing HDS7250SASUN500G in rhel4u5.
I tested this hd in 2.6.24-rc7 which needed to remove the mask in
blacklist to run the ncq and the same error also showed up.
I traced the bug and found that the interrupt finished a command (for
example, tag=0) when the driver got that adma status is
NV_ADMA_STAT_DONE and cpb->resp_flags is NV_CPB_RESP_DONE.
However, For this hd, the drive maybe didn't clear bit 0 at this moment.
It meaned the hardware had not completely finished the command.
If at the same time the driver freed the command(tag 0) and sended
another command (tag 0), the error happened.
The notifier register is 32-bit register containing notifier value.
Value is bit vector containing one bit per tag number (0-31) in
corresponding bit positions (bit 0 is for tag 0, etc). When bit is set
then ADMA indicates that command with corresponding tag number completed
execution.
So i added the check notifier code. Sometimes i saw that the notifier
reg set some bits , but the adma status set NV_ADMA_STAT_CMD_COMPLETE
,not NV_ADMA_STAT_DONE. So i added the NV_ADMA_STAT_CMD_COMPLETE check
code."

Hugh Dickens noticed that SMART commands issued from user space can
end up corupting memory. The problem occurs if the buffer used to
read data spans two pages. The reason is that the PIO sector routines
in libata are expecting physically contiguous pages when they do
sector operations, so the left overs on the second page go into the
next physically adjacent page rather than the next page in the sg
mapping.
Fix this by enforcing strict 512 byte alignment on all buffers from
userspace.

For ICH8, SCRs can be accessed using index and data register pair
located at BAR 5. This patch implements support for it such that PHY
status, errors and hardreset are available for those controllers.
This is the only case where two devices on a PATA channel have access
to SCRs and creates a unique problem of mapping two SCRs to one link.
Note that this is different from PMP case in that they aren't quite
separate links - e.g. softreset resets both devices.
This problem is worked around by merging the SCR values. To upper
layer, it looks like there is a single link with one set of SCRs but
with two devices. This works well enough for PHY event, error
reporting and hardreset.
Supporting hardreset is important because in rare cases SATA devices
fail to recover without it after PHY errors.

ata_piix requires more configuration during initialization than most
other SFF compliant controllers and one-go initialzation with
ata_pci_one() is too rigid.
This patch converts ata_piix to use two step prepare - activate

conversion brings the happy side effect of enabling PCI device before
accessing PCI configuration registers. Other than that, there

Also adds an "all" parameter so you can load this driver after all the PCI
ones in a boot time kernel and tell it to grab anything ST412 compatible
even if it is an unknown PCI device. That allows libata to offer the same
"just get me a disk somehow" fallback that old IDE did.

Some it821x RAID firmwares return 0 for the err return off both devices.
A similar issue occurs with the slave returning 0 not 1 if you plug a
gigabyte sata ramdisk into a controller that fakes two SATA ports as
master/slave on an SFF channel.
The patch does the following
- Allow the 'failed diagnostics' case on both master and slave
- Move the HORKAGE_DIAGNOSTIC check after ->dev_config
This second change also allows IT821x to fix up a problem where we report
drive diagnostic failures when in fact the drive is fine but the
microcontroller firmware doesn't appear to get it right. IT821x clears
the flag again to avoid giving the user bogus warnings about their disk.
The other IT821x change is a bit ugly, we slightly abuse the cable type
hook to fiddle with the identify data for the devices. We could add a new
hook for this but as we have only one offender and no more seeming likely
it seems better to keep libata-core clean.

qc->nbytes didn't use to include extra buffers setup by libata core
layer and my be odd. This patch makes qc->nbytes include any extra
buffers setup by libata core layer and guaranteed to be aligned on 4
byte boundary.
This value is to be used to program the host controller. As this
represents the actual length of buffer available to the controller and
the controller must be able to deal with short transfers for ATAPI
commands which can transfer variable length, this shouldn't break any
controllers while making problems like rounding-down and controllers
choking up on odd transfer bytes much less likely.

libata used private sg iterator to handle padding sg. Now that sg can
be chained, padding can be handled using standard sg ops. Convert to
chained sg.
* s/qc->__sg/qc->sg/
* s/qc->pad_sgent/qc->extra_sg[]/. Because chaining consumes one sg
entry. There need to be two extra sg entries. The renaming is also
for future addition of other extra sg entries.
* Padding setup is moved into ata_sg_setup_extra() which is organized
in a way that future addition of other extra sg entries is easy.
* qc->orig_n_elem is unused and removed.
* qc->n_elem now contains the number of sg entries that LLDs should
map. qc->mapped_n_elem is added to carry the original number of
mapped sgs for unmapping.
* The last sg of the original sg list is used to chain to extra sg
list. The original last sg is pointed to by qc->last_sg and the
content is stored in qc->saved_last_sg. It's restored during

Cable detection on NV PATA hosts isn't implemented and the CBLID-
cable isn't wired according to the sepc either, so both host-side and
generic drive-side cable detections are broken. Till now,
nv_cable_detect() relied on peeking BIOS and ACPI configurations to
upgrade to 80C but this often results in misdetection of 40C cable as
80C. Also, the original implementation was broken in that by the time
BIOS configuration is read it has already been cleared by programming
PIO0 during reset.
This patch reimplements NV mode selection such that...
* BIOS configuration value is stored during driver attach and restored
on detach.
* Cable type is fixed to ATA_CBL_PATA_IGN and mode selection is soley
done by nv_mode_filter() which peeks both BIOS and ACPI
configurations and filter accordingly.

New ata_acpi_cbl_80wire() implementation takes @gtm, in both pata_via

initial BIOS configuration, so using initial caching value makes
sense. This fixes ACPI part of cable detection in pata_amd which
previously always returned 0 because configuring PIO0 during reset
clears DMA configuration.

ATA_CBL_PATA_UNK indicates that the cable type can't be determined
from the host side and might be either 80c or 40c. libata applies
drive or other generic limit in this case. However, there are
controllers where both host and drive side detections are
misimplemented and the driver has to rely solely on private method -
peeking BIOS or ACPI configuration or using some other private
mechanism.
This patch adds ATA_CBL_PATA_IGN which tells libata to ignore the
cable type completely and just let the LLD determine the transfer mode
via host transfer mode masks and ->mode_filter().

For intel ones, ahci unconditionally OR'd 0xf to PCS. This isn't
correct for the following cases.
* ich6/7m's which only implement P0 and P2 (0xf works fine tho)
* ich8/9's which have six ports and needs 0x3f to enable all ports
This patch updates PCS programming such that...
* port_map determined by ahci_save_initial_config() is OR'd instead of 0xf
* PCS is updated only if necessary (there are turned off enable bits)
port_map is determined from PORTS_IMPL PCI register which is
implemented as write or write-once register. If the register isn't
programmed, ahci automatically generates it from number of ports,
which is good enough for PCS programming. ICH6/7M are probably the
only ones where non-contiguous enable bits are necessary && PORTS_IMPL
isn't programmed properly but they're proven to work reliably with 0xf
anyway.

Historically word 48 in the identify data was used to mean 32bit I/O
was supported for VLB IDE etc. ATA8 reassigns this word to the Trusted
Computing Group, where it is used for TCG features. This means that
an ATA8 TCG drive is going to trigger 32bit I/O on some systems which
will be funny.
Anyway we need to sort this out ready for ATA8 so:
- Reorder the ata.h header a bit so the ata_version function occurs early

- Make dword_io check the ATA version
- Add an ATA8 version checking TCG presence test
While we are at it the current drafts have a flaw where it may not be
possible to disable TCG features at boot (and opt out of the trusted
model) as TCG intends because it relies on presence of a different
optional feature (DCS). Handle this in software by refusing the TCG
commands if libata.allow_tpm is not set. (We must make it possible
as some environments such as proprietary VDR devices will doubtless
want to use it to lock up content)
Finally as with CPRM print a warning so that the user knows they may
not be able to full access and use the device.

The PDC202xx older devices do not support ATAPI DMA via the usual
interfaces. What documentation I have isn't sufficient to support DMA and
it isn't clear if the Windows drivers do this or it is possible at all.
(Neither do the drivers/ide old drivers)
So turn it ATAPI DMA off, these are disk optimised controllers.

In pata_legacy and pata_winbond we've got bugs - cpu_to_le16() instead
of cpu_to_le32(). Fortunately, both affected suckers are VLB, thus
l-e-only, so we might get away with that unless we hit it with slop == 3
(hadn't checked if playing with badly aligned sg could trigger that).
Still buggy... Moreover, pata_legacy, pata_winbond and pata_qdi forgot to
initialize pad on the write side of 32bit case in their ->data_xfer().
Hopefully the hardware does't care, but still, sending uninitialized

CERR reports errors detected during executing a command. This doesn't
mean the error is tied to the command and can be recovered by just
issuing it again. Many of the errors are fatal port-wide connditions
including HSM violation, host bus error and ATA bus error and require
freezing and port reset.
The freezing part wasn't implemented previously. This used to be okay
because port resets were scheduled anyway and EH eventually resets and
recovers the port. With PMP support added, this is no longer true.
The error condition and recover actions are attributed to the fan-out
port and the host port condition isn't properly recovered leading to
EH failures.
This patch makes CERR errors which require resets to freeze the port.
This will force host port reset and proper recovery.

This patch relaxes the default SCSI DMA alignment from 512 bytes to 4
bytes. I remember from previous discussions that usb and firewire have
sector size alignment requirements, so I upped their alignments in the
respective slave allocs.
The reason for doing this is so that we don't get such a huge amount of
copy overhead in bio_copy_user() for udev. (basically all inquiries it
issues can now be directly mapped).

After non-classifying reset, ehc->classes[] could contain
ATA_DEV_UNKNOWN which used to be normalized to ATA_DEV_NONE for
consistency. However, this causes unfortunate side effect for drivers
which have non-classifying hardresets (e.g. sata_nv) by making
hardreset report ATA_DEV_NONE for non-classifying resets and thus
makes EH believe that the port is unoccupied and recovery can be
skipped. The end result is that after a device is swapped with
another one, the new device isn't attached after the old one is
detached.
This patch makes ata_eh_reset() not normalize UNKNOWN to NONE after
non-classifying resets. This fixes the above problem. As UNKNOWN and
NONE are handled differently by only EH hotplug logic, this doesn't
cause other behavior changes.

With ATAPI transfer chunk size properly programmed, libata PIO HSM
should be able to handle full spurious data chunks. Also, it's a good
idea to suppress trailing data warning for misc ATAPI commands as
there can be many of them per command - for example, if the chunk size
is 16 and the drive tries to transfer 510 bytes, there can be 31
trailing data messages.
This patch makes the following updates to libata ATAPI PIO HSM
implementation.
* Make it drain full spurious chunks.
* Suppress trailing data warning message for misc commands.
* Put limit on how many bytes can be drained.
* If odd, round up consumed bytes and the number of bytes to be
drained. This gets the number of bytes to drain right for drivers
which do 16bit PIO.

Implement _GTF command filtering which can be controlled by
libata.acpi_filter kernel parameter. Currently SETXFER and LOCK
commands are filtered.
libata configures transfer mode by itself and _GTF SETXFER commands
can potentially disrupt device configuration. _GTM/_STM mechanism
can't handle hotplugging too well and when _GTF is executed,
controller is in PIO0 rather than the mode _STM configured.
Note that detecting SET MAX LOCK requires looking at the previous
command. This adds a bit to code complexity.

As _GTF commands can't transfer data, device error never signals
transfer error. It indicates that the device vetoed the operation, so
it's meaningless to retry.
This patch makes libata-acpi to report and continue on device errors
when executing _GTF commands. Also commands rejected by device don't
contribute to the number of _GTF commands executed.
While at it, update _GTF execution reporting such that all successful
commands are logged at KERN_DEBUG and rename taskfile_load_raw() to
ata_acpi_run_tf() for consistency.

* If _GTF evalution fails, it's pointless to retry. If nothing else
is wrong, just ignore the error.
* After disabling ACPI, return success iff the number of executed _GTF
command equals zero. Otherwise, tell EH to retry. This change
fixes bogus 1 return bug where ata_acpi_on_devcfg() expects the
caller to reload IDENTIFY data and continue but the caller
interprets it as an error.

On certain implementations, _GTF evaluation depends on preceding _STM
and both can be pretty picky about the configuration. Using _GTM
result cached during controller initialization satisfies the most
neurotic _STM implementation. However, libata evaluates _GTF after
reset during device configuration and the hardware state can be
different from what _GTF expects and can cause evaluation failure.
This patch adds dev->gtf_cache and updates ata_dev_get_GTF() such that
it uses the cached value if available. Cache is cleared with a call
to ata_acpi_clear_gtf().
Because for SATA ACPI nodes _GTF must be evaluated after _SDD which
can't be done till IDENTIFY is complete, _GTF caching from
ata_acpi_on_resume() is used only for IDE ACPI nodes.

_GTM fetches currently configured transfer mode while _STM configures
controller according to _GTM parameter and prepares transfer mode
configuration TFs for _GTF. In many cases _GTM and _STM
implementations are quite brittle and can't cope with configuration
changed by libata.
libata does not depend on ATA ACPI to configure devices. The only
reason libata performs _GTM and _STM are to make _GTF evaluation
succeed and libata also doesn't care about how _GTF TFs configure
transfer mode. It overrides that configuration anyway, so from
libata's POV, it doesn't matter what value is feeded to _STM as long
as evaluation succeeds for _STM and following _GTF.
This patch adds dev->__acpi_init_gtm and store initial _GTM values on
host initialization before modified by reset and mode configuration.
If the field is valid, ata_acpi_init_gtm() returns pointer to the
saved _GTM structure; otherwise, NULL.
This saved value is used for _STM during resume and peek at
BIOS/firmware programmed initial timing for later use. The accessor
is there to make building w/o ACPI easy as dev->__acpi_init doesn't
exist if ACPI is not enabled.
On driver detach, the initial BIOS configuration is restored by
executing _STM with the initial _GTM values such that the next driver
can also use the initial BIOS configured values.

Interestingly, sata_sil raises spurious interrupts if it's coupled
with Sil SATA_PATA bridge. Currently, sata_sil interrupt handler is
strict about spurious interrupts and freezes the port when it occurs.
This patch makes it more forgiving.
* On SATA PHY event interrupt, serror value is checked to see whether
it really is PHYRDY CHG event. If not, SATA PHY event interrupt is
ignored.
* If ATA interrupt occurs while no command is in progress, it's
cleared and ignored.

Spurious NCQ completion detection implemented in ahci was incorrect.
On AHCI receving and processing FISes and raising interrupts are not
interlocked and spurious interrupts are expected.
For example, if an interrupt occurs while interrupt handler is running
and the running interrupt handler handles the event the new IRQ
indicated, after IRQ handler finishes, it will be executed again
because IRQ pending bit is set by the new interrupt but there won't be
anything to process.
Please read the following message for more information.

This patch...
* Removes all spurious IRQ whining from ahci. Spurious NCQ completion
detection was completely wrong. Spurious D2H Register FIS taught us
that some early drives send spurious D2H Register FIS with I bit set
while NCQ commands are in progress but none of recent drives does
that and even the ones which show such behavior can do NCQ fine.
* Kills all NCQ blacklist entries which were added because of spurious
NCQ completions. I tracked down each commit and verified all
removed ones are actually added because of spurious completions.
WD740ADFD-00NLR1 wasn't deleted but moved upward because the drive
not only had spurious NCQ completions but also is slow on sequential
data transfers if NCQ is enabled.
Maxtor 7V300F0 was added by 0e3dbc01d5
from Alan Cox. I can only find evidences that the drive only had
troubles with spuruious completions by searching the mailing list.
