64ac24e738 Generic semaphore implementation
Semaphores are no longer performance-critical, so a generic C
implementation is better for maintainability, debuggability and
extensibility. Thanks to Peter Zijlstra for fixing the lockdep
warning. Thanks to Harvey Harrison for pointing out that the
unlikely() was unnecessary.

e48b3deee4 Add semaphore.h to kernel_lock.c
kernel_lock.c uses DECLARE_MUTEX, up() and down() without explicitly
including asm/semaphore.h. This is fragile and leaves it vulnerable
to breakage during header reorganisations.

d9024df02f [LMB] Restructure allocation loops to avoid unsigned underflow
There is a potential bug in __lmb_alloc_base where we subtract `size'
from the base address of a reserved region without checking whether
the subtraction could wrap around and produce a very large unsigned
value. In fact it probably isn't possible to hit the bug in practice
since it would only occur in the situation where we can't satisfy the
allocation request and there is a reserved region starting at 0.

This fixes the potential bug by breaking out of the loop when we get
to the point where the base of the reserved region is less than the
size requested. This also restructures the loop to be a bit easier to
follow.

The same logic got copied into lmb_alloc_nid_unreserved, so this makes
a similar change there. Here the bug is more likely to be hit because
the outer loop (in lmb_alloc_nid) goes through the memory regions in
increasing order rather than decreasing order as __lmb_alloc_base
does, and we are therefore more likely to hit the case where we are
testing against a reserved region with a base address of 0.

300613e523 [LMB] Fix some whitespace and other formatting issues, use pr_debug
This makes no semantic changes. It fixes the whitespace and formatting
a bit, gets rid of a local DBG macro and uses the equivalent pr_debug
instead, and restructures one while loop that had a function call and
assignment in the condition to be a bit more readable. Some comments
about functions being called with relocation disabled were also removed
as they would just be confusing to most readers now that the code is
in lib/.

c50f68c8ae [LMB] Add lmb_alloc_nid()
A variant of lmb_alloc() that tries to allocate memory on a specified
NUMA node 'nid' but falls back to normal lmb_alloc() if that fails.

The caller provides a 'nid_range' function pointer which assists the
allocator. It is given args 'start', 'end', and pointer to integer
'this_nid'.

It places at 'this_nid' the NUMA node id that corresponds to 'start',
and returns the end address within 'start' to 'end' at which memory
assosciated with 'nid' ends.

This callback allows a platform to use lmb_alloc_nid() in just
about any context, even ones in which early_pfn_to_nid() might
not be working yet.

This function will be used by the NUMA setup code on sparc64, and also
it can be used by powerpc, replacing it's hand crafted
"careful_allocation()" function in arch/powerpc/mm/numa.c

If x86 ever converts it's NUMA support over to using the LMB helpers,
it can use this too as it has something entirely similar.

b1adaf65ba [SCSI] block: add sg buffer copy helper functions
This patch adds new three helper functions to copy data between an SG
list and a linear buffer.

- sg_copy_from_buffer copies data from linear buffer to an SG list

- sg_copy_to_buffer copies data from an SG list to a linear buffer

When the APIs copy data from a linear buffer to an SG list,
flush_kernel_dcache_page is called. It's not necessary for everyone
but it's a no-op on most architectures and in general the API is not
used in performance critical path.

These messages are a regression compared with 2.6.24, which did not
flood the syslog with them.

The actual underlying problem was introduced in 2.6.23, when somebody
made the string parsing no longer accept nul-terminated strings as a
valid input to store_uevent().

Eg. "add\0" was valid prior to 2.6.23, where the code regressed to
require "add" without the '\0'.

This patch fixes the 2.6.23 / 2.6.24 regressions, by having the code
once again tolerate the trailing '\0', if present.

According to GregKH, this mainly affects older Ubuntu systems, such as
the one I have here that requires this fix.

b9e76a0074 x86-32: Pass the full resource data to ioremap()
It appears that 64-bit PCI resources cannot possibly ever have worked on
x86-32 even when the RESOURCES_64BIT config option was set, because any
driver that tried to [pci_]ioremap() the resource would have been unable
to do so because the high 32 bits would have been silently dropped on
the floor by the ioremap() routines that only used "unsigned long".

Change them to use "resource_size_t" instead, which properly encodes the
whole 64-bit resource data if RESOURCES_64BIT is enabled.

Commit 681cc5cd3e ("iommu sg merging:

possibilities for entering an endless loop in lib/swiotlb.c:

 - if max_slots is zero (possible if mask is ~0UL)
 - if the number of slots requested fits into a swiotlb segment, but is
   too large for the part of a segment which remains after considering

iommu_is_span_boundary is used internally in the IOMMU helper

9b706aee7d x86: trivial printk optimizations
In arch/x86/boot/printf.c gets rid of unused tail of digits: const char
*digits = "0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"; (we are using 0-9a-f

Uses smaller/faster lowercasing (by ORing with 0x20)
if we know that we work on numbers/digits. Makes
strtoul smaller, and also we are getting rid of

  static const char small_digits[] = "0123456789abcdefx";
  static const char large_digits[] = "0123456789ABCDEFX";

since this works equally well:

  static const char digits[16] = "0123456789ABCDEF";

Size savings:

$ size vmlinux.org vmlinux
   text data bss dec hex filename
 877320  112252   90112 1079684  107984 vmlinux.org
 877048  112252   90112 1079412  107874 vmlinux

It may be also a tiny bit faster because code has less
branches now, but I doubt it is measurable.

06b2a76d25 Add new string functions strict_strto* and convert kernel params to use them
Currently, for every sysfs node, the callers will be responsible for
implementing store operation, so many many callers are doing duplicate
things to validate input, they have the same mistakes because they are
calling simple_strtol/ul/ll/uul, especially for module params, they are
just numeric, but you can echo such values as 0x1234xxx, 07777888 and
1234aaa, for these cases, module params store operation just ignores
succesive invalid char and converts prefix part to a numeric although input
is acctually invalid.

This patch tries to fix the aforementioned issues and implements
strict_strtox serial functions, kernel/params.c uses them to strictly
validate input, so module params will reject such values as 0x1234xxxx and
returns an error:

write error: Invalid argument

Any modules which export numeric sysfs node can use strict_strtox instead of

8b88b0998e libfs: allow error return from simple attributes
Sometimes simple attributes might need to return an error, e.g. for
acquiring a mutex interruptibly. In fact we have that situation in
spufs already which is the original user of the simple attributes. This
patch merged the temporarily forked attributes in spufs back into the
main ones and allows to return errors.

Add architecture support for the MN10300/AM33 CPUs produced by MEI to the
kernel.

This patch also adds board support for the ASB2303 with the ASB2308 daughter
board, and the ASB2305. The only processor supported is the MN103E010, which
is an AM33v2 core plus on-chip devices.

8ff12cfc00 SLUB: Support for performance statistics
The statistics provided here allow the monitoring of allocator behavior but
at the cost of some (minimal) loss of performance. Counters are placed in
SLUB's per cpu data structure. The per cpu structure may be extended by the
statistics to grow larger than one cacheline which will increase the cache
footprint of SLUB.

There is a compile option to enable/disable the inclusion of the runtime
statistics and its off by default.

The slabinfo tool is enhanced to support these statistics via two options:

-D Switches the line of information displayed for a slab from size
	mode to activity mode.

-A	Sorts the slabs displayed by activity. This allows the display of
	the slabs most important to the performance of a certain load.

-r	Report option will report detailed statistics on

Example (tbench load):

slabinfo -AD ->Shows the most active slabs

So the skbuff_fclone_cache is of highest importance for the tbench load.
Pretty high load on the 192 sized slab. Look for the aliases

slabinfo -a | grep 000192

Likely skbuff_head_cache.

Looking into the statistics of the skbuff_fclone_cache is possible through

Descriptions of the output:

Total: The total number of allocation and frees that occurred for a
		slab

Fastpath:	The number of allocations/frees that used the fastpath.

Slowpath:	Other allocations

Page Alloc:	Number of calls to the page allocator as a result of slowpath
		processing

Add Partial:	Number of slabs added to the partial list through free or
		alloc (occurs during cpuslab flushes)

Remove Partial:	Number of slabs removed from the partial list as a result of
		allocations retrieving a partial slab or by a free freeing
		the last object of a slab.

RemoteObj/Froz:	How many times were remotely freed object encountered when a
		slab was about to be deactivated. Frozen: How many times was
		free able to skip list processing because the slab was in use
		as the cpuslab of another processor.

Flushes:	Number of times the cpuslab was flushed on request
		(kmem_cache_shrink, may result from races in __slab_alloc)

Refill: Number of times we were able to refill the cpuslab from
		remotely freed objects for the same slab.

Deactivate:	Statistics how slabs were deactivated. Shows how they were
		put onto the partial list.

In general fastpath is very good. Slowpath without partial list processing is
also desirable. Any touching of partial list uses node specific locks which
may potentially cause list lock contention.

e2848a0efe radix-tree: avoid atomic allocations for preloaded insertions
Most pagecache (and some other) radix tree insertions have the great
opportunity to preallocate a few nodes with relaxed gfp flags. But the
preallocation is squandered when it comes time to allocate a node, we
default to first attempting a GFP_ATOMIC allocation -- that doesn't
normally fail, but it can eat into atomic memory reserves that we don't
need to be using.

Another upshot of this is that it removes the sometimes highly contended
zone->lock from underneath tree_lock. Pagecache insertions are always
performed with a radix tree preload, and after this change, such a
situation will never fall back to kmem_cache_alloc within
radix_tree_node_alloc.

David Miller reports seeing this allocation fail on a highly threaded
sparc64 system:

The calltrace is significant: __do_page_cache_readahead allocates a number
of pages with GFP_KERNEL, and hence it should have reclaimed sufficient
memory to satisfy GFP_ATOMIC allocations. However after the list of pages
goes to mpage_readpages, there can be significant intervals (including disk
IO) before all the pages are inserted into the radix-tree. So the reserves
can easily be depleted at that point. The patch is confirmed to fix the
problem.

f212ec4b7b x86: early boot debugging via FireWire (ohci1394_dma=early)
This patch adds a new configuration option, which adds support for a new
early_param which gets checked in arch/x86/kernel/setup_{32,64}.c:setup_arch()
to decide wether OHCI-1394 FireWire controllers should be initialized and
enabled for physical DMA access to allow remote debugging of early problems
like issues ACPI or other subsystems which are executed very early.

If the config option is not enabled, no code is changed, and if the boot
paramenter is not given, no new code is executed, and independent of that,
all new code is freed after boot, so the config option can be even enabled
in standard, non-debug kernels.

With specialized tools, it is then possible to get debugging information
from machines which have no serial ports (notebooks) such as the printk
buffer contents, or any data which can be referenced from global pointers,
if it is stored below the 4GB limit and even memory dumps of of the physical
RAM region below the 4GB limit can be taken without any cooperation from the
CPU of the host, so the machine can be crashed early, it does not matter.

In the extreme, even kernel debuggers can be accessed in this way. I wrote
a small kgdb module and an accompanying gdb stub for FireWire which allows
to gdb to talk to kgdb using remote remory reads and writes over FireWire.

An version of the gdb stub fore FireWire is able to read all global data
from a system which is running a a normal kernel without any kernel debugger,
without any interruption or support of the system's CPU. That way, e.g. the
task struct and so on can be read and even manipulated when the physical DMA
access is granted.

A HOWTO is included in this patch, in Documentation/debugging-via-ohci1394.txt
and I've put a copy online at
ftp://ftp.suse.de/private/bk/firewire/docs/debugging-via-ohci1394.txt

It also has links to all the tools which are available to make use of it

6dab27784b x86: add a simple backtrace test module
During the work on the x86 32 and 64 bit backtrace code I found it useful
to have a simple test module to test a process and irq context backtrace.
Since the existing backtrace code was buggy, I figure it might be useful
to have such a test module in the kernel so that maybe we can even
detect such bugs earlier..

8c1c935642 x86: kprobes: add kprobes smoke tests that run on boot
Here is a quick and naive smoke test for kprobes. This is intended to
just verify if some unrelated change broke the *probes subsystem. It is
self contained, architecture agnostic and isn't of any great use by itself.

This needs to be built in the kernel and runs a basic set of tests to
verify if kprobes, jprobes and kretprobes run fine on the kernel. In case
of an error, it'll print out a message with a "BUG" prefix.

This is a start; we intend to add more tests to this bucket over time.

571e768202 [LIB] pcounter : unline too big functions
Before pushing pcounter to Linus tree, I would like to make some adjustments.

Goal is to reduce kernel text size, by unlining too big functions.

When a pcounter is bound to a statically defined per_cpu variable,
we define two small helpers functions. (No more folding function
using the fat for_each_possible_cpu(cpu) ... )

static DEFINE_PER_CPU(int, NAME##_pcounter_values);
static void NAME##_pcounter_add(struct pcounter *self, int val)
{
       __get_cpu_var(NAME##_pcounter_values) += val;
}
static int NAME##_pcounter_getval(const struct pcounter *self, int cpu)
{
       return per_cpu(NAME##_pcounter_values, cpu);
}

Fast path is therefore unchanged, while folding/alloc/free is now unlined.

This saves 228 bytes on i386

7cedb1f17f SG: work with the SCSI fixed maximum allocations.
SCSI sg table allocation has a maximum size (of SCSI_MAX_SG_SEGMENTS,
currently 128) and this will cause a BUG_ON() in SCSI if something
tries an allocation over it. This patch adds a size limit to the
chaining allocator to allow the specification of the maximum
allocation size for chaining, so we always chain in units of the

09f82ea928 Kobject: drop child->parent ref at unregistration
This patch (as1015) reverts changes that were made to the driver core
about four years ago. The intent back then was to avoid certain kinds
of invalid memory accesses by leaving kernel objects allocated as long
as any of their children were still allocated. The original and
correct approach was to wait only as long as any children were still
_registered_; that's what this patch reinstates.

This fixes a problem in the SCSI core made visible by the class_device
to regular device conversion: A reference loop (scsi_device holds
reference to request_queue, which is the child of a gendisk, which is
the child of the scsi_device) prevents the data structures from being
released, even though they are deregistered okay.

It's possible that this change will cause a few bugs to surface,
things that have been hidden for several years. They can be fixed
easily enough by having the child device take an explicit reference to
the parent whenever needed.

f16b34aa13 lib: proportion: fix underflow in prop_norm_percpu()
Zhe Jiang noticed that its possible to underflow pl->events in
prop_norm_percpu() when the value returned by percpu_counter_read() is less
than the error on that read and the period delay > 1. In that case half might
not trigger the batch increment and the value will be identical on the next
iteration, causing the same half to be subtracted again and again.

Fix this by rewriting the division as a single subtraction instead of a
subtraction loop and using percpu_counter_sum() when the value returned by
percpu_counter_read() is smaller than the error.

The latter is still needed if we want pl->events to shrink properly in the
error region.

c7af77b584 sched: mark rwsem functions as __sched for wchan/profiling
This following commit

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=fdf8cb0909b531f9ae8f9b9d7e4eb35ba3505f07

un-inlined a low-level rwsem function, but did not mark it as __sched.
The result is that it now shows up as thread wchan (which also affects
/proc/profile stats). The following simple patch fixes this by properly
marking rwsem_down_failed_common() as a __sched function.

Also in this patch, which is up for discussion, marks down_read() and
down_write() proper as __sched. For profiling, it is pretty much
useless to know that a semaphore is beig help - it is necessary to know
_which_ one. By going up another frame on the stack, the information
becomes much more useful.

In summary, the below change to lib/rwsem.c should be applied; the
changes to kernel/rwsem.c could be applied if other kernel hackers agree
with my proposal that down_read()/down_write() in the profile is not
enough.

de48844398 Permit silencing of __deprecated warnings.
The __deprecated marker is quite useful in highlighting the remnants of
old APIs that want removing.

However, it is quite normal for one or more years to pass, before the

deleted.

Thus, like __must_check, add a Kconfig option that permits the silencing
of this compiler warning.

This change mimics the ifdef-ery and Kconfig defaults of MUST_CHECK as
closely as possible.

Cause writes to cpuset "cpus" file to update cpus_allowed for member tasks:

- add a simple generic priority heap type to allow efficient collection
  of batches of tasks to be processed without duplicating or missing any
  tasks in subsequent batches.

- make "cpus" file update a no-op if the mask hasn't changed

- fix race between update_cpumask() and sched_setaffinity() by making

430d275a39 avoid negative (and full-width) shifts in radix-tree.c
Negative shifts are not allowed in C (the result is undefined). Same thing
with full-width shifts.

It works on most platforms but not on the VAX with gcc 4.0.1 (it results in an
"operand reserved" fault).

Shifting by more than the width of the value on the left is also not
allowed. I think the extra '>> 1' tacked on at the end in the original
code was an attempt to work around that. Getting rid of that is an extra
feature of this patch.

Here's the chapter and verse, taken from the final draft of the C99
standard ("6.5.7 Bitwise shift operators", paragraph 3):

  "The integer promotions are performed on each of the operands. The
  type of the result is that of the promoted left operand. If the
  value of the right operand is negative or is greater than or equal
  to the width of the promoted left operand, the behavior is
  undefined."

Thank you to Jan-Benedict Glaw, Christoph Hellwig, Maciej Rozycki, Pekka
Enberg, Andreas Schwab, and Christoph Lameter for review. Special thanks

004429956b handle recursive calls to bust_spinlocks()
Various architectures may call bust_spinlocks() recursively; the function
itself, however, doesn't appear to be meant to be called in this manner.
Nevertheless, this doesn't appear to be a problem as long as
bust_spinlocks(0) doesn't get called twice in a row (otherwise,
unblank_screen() may enter the scheduler). However, at least on i386 die()
has been capable of returning (and on other architectures this should
really be that way, too) when notify_die() returns NOTIFY_STOP.

Short of getting a reply to a respective query, this patch makes
bust_spinlocks() increment/decrement oops_in_progress, and wake klogd only
when the count drops back to zero.

e12ba74d8f Group short-lived and reclaimable kernel allocations
This patch marks a number of allocations that are either short-lived such as
network buffers or are reclaimable such as inode allocations. When something
like updatedb is called, long-lived and unmovable kernel allocations tend to
be spread throughout the address space which increases fragmentation.

This patch groups these allocations together as much as possible by adding a
new MIGRATE_TYPE. The MIGRATE_RECLAIMABLE type is for allocations that can be
reclaimed on demand, but not moved. i.e. they can be migrated by deleting
them and re-reading the information from elsewhere.

26fb1589cb fix the max path calculation in radix-tree.c
A while back, Nick Piggin introduced a patch to reduce the node memory
usage for small files (commit cfd9b7df4a):

-#define RADIX_TREE_MAP_SHIFT	6
+#define RADIX_TREE_MAP_SHIFT	(CONFIG_BASE_SMALL ? 4 : 6)

Unfortunately, he didn't take into account the fact that the
calculation of the maximum path was based on an assumption of having
to round up:

#define RADIX_TREE_MAX_PATH (RADIX_TREE_INDEX_BITS/RADIX_TREE_MAP_SHIFT + 2)

So, if CONFIG_BASE_SMALL is set, you will end up with a
RADIX_TREE_MAX_PATH that is one greater than necessary. The practical
upshot of this is just a bit of wasted memory (one long in the
height_to_maxindex array, an extra pre-allocated radix tree node per
cpu, and extra stack usage in a couple of functions), but it seems
worth getting right.

It's also worth noting that I never build with CONFIG_BASE_SMALL.
What I did to test this was duplicate the code in a small user-space
program and check the results of the calculations for max path and the
contents of the height_to_maxindex array.

c0bc9875b7 radix-tree: use indirect bit
Rather than sign direct radix-tree pointers with a special bit, sign the
indirect one that hangs off the root. This means that, given a lookup_slot
operation, the invalid result will be differentiated from the valid
(previously, valid results could have the bit either set or clear).

This does not affect slot lookups which occur under lock -- they can never
return an invalid result. Is needed in future for lockless pagecache.

bfe8df3d31 slow down printk during boot
Optionally add a boot delay after each kernel printk() call, crudely
measured in milliseconds, with a maximum delay of 10 seconds per printk.

Enable CONFIG_BOOT_PRINTK_DELAY=y and then add (e.g.):
"lpj=loops_per_jiffy boot_delay=100"
to the kernel command line.

It has been useful in cases like "during boot, my machine just reboots or the
screen goes black" by slowing down printk, (and adding initcall_debug), we can
usually see the last thing that happened before the lights went out which is
usually a valuable clue.

aa24886e37 dma_free_coherent() needs irqs enabled (sigh)
On at least ARM (and I'm told MIPS too) dma_free_coherent() has a newish
call context requirement: unlike its dma_alloc_coherent() sibling, it may
not be called with IRQs disabled. (This was new behavior on ARM as of late
2005, caused by ARM SMP updates.) This little surprise can be annoyingly
driver-visible.

Since it looks like that restriction won't be removed, this patch changes
the definition of the API to include that requirement. Also, to help catch
nonportable drivers, it updates the x86 and swiotlb versions to include the
relevant warnings. (I already observed that it trips on the
bus_reset_tasklet of the new firewire_ohci driver.)

a4e8b91254 sysfs: move sysfs file poll implementation to sysfs_open_dirent
Sysfs file poll implementation is scattered over sysfs and kobject.
Event numbering is done in sysfs_dirent but wait itself is done on
kobject. This not only unecessarily bloats both kobject and
sysfs_dirent but is also buggy - if a sysfs_dirent is removed while
there still are pollers, the associaton betwen the kobject and
sysfs_dirent breaks and kobject may be freed with the pollers still
sleeping on it.

This patch moves whole poll implementation into sysfs_open_dirent.
Each time a sysfs_open_dirent is created, event number restarts from 1
and pollers sleep on sysfs_open_dirent. As event sequence number is
meaningless without any open file and pollers should have open file
and thus sysfs_open_dirent, this ephemeral event counting works and is
a saner implementation.

This patch fixes the dnagling sleepers bug and reduces the sizes of
kobject and sysfs_dirent by one pointer.

90bc61359d sysfs: Remove first pass at shadow directory support
While shadow directories appear to be a good idea, the current scheme
of controlling their creation and destruction outside of sysfs appears
to be a locking and maintenance nightmare in the face of sysfs
directories dynamically coming and going. Which can now occur for
directories containing network devices when CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED is
not set.

This patch removes everything from the initial shadow directory support
that allowed the shadow directory creation to be controlled at a higher
level. So except for a few bits of sysfs_rename_dir everything from

ce2c9cb025 kobject: remove the static array for the name
Due to historical reasons, struct kobject contained a static array for
the name, and a dynamic pointer in case the name got bigger than the

This patch removes the static array, potentially saving a lot of memory

it is okay for iseries_lparcfg_data to be referencing shared_proc

df336d1c7b Fix swiotlb_sync_single_range()
If the swiotlb maps a multi-slab region, swiotlb_sync_single_range() can be
invoked to sync a sub-region which does not include the first slab.
Unfortunately io_tlb_orig_addr[] is only initialised for the first slab,
and hence the call to sync_single() will read a garbage orig_addr in this
case.

This patch fixes the issue by initialising all mapped slabs in
io_tlb_orig_addr[]. It also correctly adjusts the buffer pointer in
sync_single() to handle the case that the given dma_addr is not aligned on
a slab boundary.

f20786ff4d lockstat: core infrastructure
Introduce the core lock statistics code.

Lock statistics provides lock wait-time and hold-time (as well as the count
of corresponding contention and acquisitions events). Also, the first few
call-sites that encounter contention are tracked.

Lock wait-time is the time spent waiting on the lock. This provides insight
into the locking scheme, that is, a heavily contended lock is indicative of
a too coarse locking scheme.

Lock hold-time is the duration the lock was held, this provides a reference for
the wait-time numbers, so they can be put into perspective.

  1)
    lock
  2)
    ... do stuff ..
    unlock
  3)

The time between 1 and 2 is the wait-time. The time between 2 and 3 is the
hold-time.

The lockdep held-lock tracking code is reused, because it already collects locks
into meaningful groups (classes), and because it is an existing infrastructure
for lock instrumentation.

Currently lockdep tracks lock acquisition with two hooks:

  lock()
    lock_acquire()
    _lock()

 ... code protected by lock ...

  unlock()
    lock_release()
    _unlock()

We need to extend this with two more hooks, in order to measure contention.

  lock_contended() - used to measure contention events
  lock_acquired() - completion of the contention

These are then placed the following way:

  lock()
    lock_acquire()
    if (!_try_lock())
      lock_contended()
      _lock()
      lock_acquired()

 ... do locked stuff ...

  unlock()
    lock_release()
    _unlock()

(Note: the try_lock() 'trick' is used to avoid instrumenting all platform
       dependent lock primitive implementations.)

It is also possible to toggle the two lockdep features at runtime using:

  /proc/sys/kernel/prove_locking
  /proc/sys/kernel/lock_stat

(esp. turning off the O(n^2) prove_locking functionaliy can help)

4277eedd79 vsprintf.c: optimizing, part 2: base 10 conversion speedup, v2
Optimize integer-to-string conversion in vsprintf.c for base 10. This is
by far the most used conversion, and in some use cases it impacts
performance. For example, top reads /proc/$PID/stat for every process, and
with 4000 processes decimal conversion alone takes noticeable time.

Using code from

http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/~jones/bcd/decimal.html
(with permission from the author, Douglas W. Jones)

binary-to-decimal-string conversion is done in groups of five digits at
once, using only additions/subtractions/shifts (with -O2; -Os throws in
some multiply instructions).

On i386 arch gcc 4.1.2 -O2 generates ~500 bytes of code.

This patch is run tested. Userspace benchmark/test is also attached.
I tested it on PIII and AMD64 and new code is generally ~2.5 times
faster. On AMD64:

# ./vsprintf_verify-O2
Original decimal conv: .......... 151 ns per iteration
Patched decimal conv: .......... 62 ns per iteration
Testing correctness
12895992590592 ok...        [Ctrl-C]
# ./vsprintf_verify-O2
Original decimal conv: .......... 151 ns per iteration
Patched decimal conv: .......... 62 ns per iteration
Testing correctness
26025406464 ok...        [Ctrl-C]

More realistic test: top from busybox project was modified to
report how many us it took to scan /proc (this does not account
any processing done after that, like sorting process list),
and then I test it with 4000 processes:

#!/bin/sh
i=4000
while test $i != 0; do
    sleep 30 &
    let i--
done
busybox top -b -n3 >/dev/null

on unpatched kernel:

top: 4120 processes took 102864 microseconds to scan
top: 4120 processes took 91757 microseconds to scan
top: 4120 processes took 92517 microseconds to scan
top: 4120 processes took 92581 microseconds to scan

on patched kernel:

top: 4120 processes took 75460 microseconds to scan
top: 4120 processes took 66451 microseconds to scan
top: 4120 processes took 67267 microseconds to scan
top: 4120 processes took 67618 microseconds to scan

The speedup comes from much faster generation of /proc/PID/stat
by sprintf() calls inside the kernel.

b39a734097 vsprintf.c: optimizing, part 1 (easy and obvious stuff)
* There is no point in having full "0...9a...z" constant vector,
  if we use only "0...9a...f" (and "x" for "0x").

* Post-decrement usually needs a few more instructions, so use
  pre decrement instead where makes sense:
-       while (i < precision--) {
+       while (i <= --precision) {

* if base != 10 (=> base 8 or 16), we can avoid using division
  in a loop and use mask/shift, obtaining much faster conversion.
  (More complex optimization for base 10 case is in the second patch).

Overall, size vsprintf.o shows ~80 bytes smaller text section
with this patch applied.

608e261968 generic bug: use show_regs() instead of dump_stack()
The current generic bug implementation has a call to dump_stack() in case a
WARN_ON(whatever) gets hit. Since report_bug(), which calls dump_stack(),
gets called from an exception handler we can do better: just pass the
pt_regs structure to report_bug() and pass it to show_regs() in case of a
warning. This will give more debug informations like register contents,
etc... In addition this avoids some pointless lines that dump_stack()
emits, since it includes a stack backtrace of the exception handler which
is of no interest in case of a warning. E.g. on s390 the following lines
are currently always present in a stack backtrace if dump_stack() gets
called from report_bug():

 [<000000000001517a>] show_trace+0x92/0xe8)

c67ad917cb percpu_counters(): use cpu notifiers
per-cpu counters presently must iterate over all possible CPUs in the
exhaustive percpu_counter_sum().

But it can be much better to only iterate over the presently-online CPUs. To
do this, we must arrange for an offlined CPU's count to be spilled into the
counter's central count.

We can do this for all percpu_counters in the machine by linking them into a
single global list and walking that list at CPU_DEAD time.

(I hope. Might have race windows in which the percpu_counter_sum() count is
inaccurate?)

Also add support to switch off slab debugging for a kernel that was
built with CONFIG_SLUB_DEBUG_ON. This works by specifying

slub_debug=-

as a kernel parameter.

96d7fa421e lib: add idr_for_each()
This patch adds an iterator function for the idr data structure. Compared
to just iterating through the idr with an integer and idr_find, this
iterator is (almost, but not quite) linear in the number of elements, as
opposed to the number of integers in the range covered by the idr. This
makes a difference for sparse idrs, but more importantly, it's a nicer way
to iterate through the elements.

The drm subsystem is moving to idr for tracking contexts and drawables, and
with this change, we can use the idr exclusively for tracking these
resources.

d7f0923d83 [LIB]: export radix_tree_preload()
XFS filestreams functionality uses radix trees and the preload
functions. XFS can be built as a module and hence we need
radix_tree_preload() exported. radix_tree_preload_end() is a
static inline, so it doesn't need exporting.

72dba584b6 ida: implement idr based id allocator
Implement idr based id allocator. ida is used the same way idr is
used but lacks id -> ptr translation and thus consumes much less
memory. struct ida_bitmap is attached as leaf nodes to idr tree which
is managed by the idr code. Each ida_bitmap is 128bytes long and
contains slightly less than a thousand slots.

ida is more aggressive with releasing extra resources acquired using
ida_pre_get(). After every successful id allocation, ida frees one
reserved idr_layer if possible. Reserved ida_bitmap is not freed
automatically but only one ida_bitmap is reserved and it's almost
always used right away. Under most circumstances, ida won't hold on
to memory for too long which isn't actively used.

Separate out idr_mark_full() from sub_alloc() and make marking the

7aae6dd80e idr: fix obscure bug in allocation path
In sub_alloc(), when bitmap search fails, it goes up one level to
continue search. This is done by updating the id cursor and searching
the upper level again. If the cursor was at the end of the upper
level, we need to go further than that.

This wasn't implemented and when that happens the part of the cursor
which indexes into the upper level wraps and sub_alloc() ends up
searching the wrong bitmap. It allocates id which doesn't match the
actual slot.

This patch fixes this by restarting from the top if the search needs
to go higher than one level.

c790923499 hexdump: more output formatting
Add a prefix string parameter. Callers are responsible for any string
length/alignment that they want to see in the output. I.e., callers should
pad strings to achieve alignment if they want that.

Add rowsize parameter. This is the number of raw data bytes to be printed
per line. Must be 16 or 32.

Add a groupsize parameter. This allows callers to dump values as 1-byte,
2-byte, 4-byte, or 8-byte numbers. Default is 1-byte numbers. If the
total length is not an even multiple of groupsize, 1-byte numbers are
printed.

Add an "ascii" output parameter. This causes ASCII data output following
the hex data output.

Clean up some doc examples.

Align the ASCII output on all lines that are produced by one call.

Add a new interface, print_hex_dump_bytes(), that is a shortcut to
print_hex_dump(), using default parameter values to print 16 bytes in
byte-size chunks of hex + ASCII output, using printk level KERN_DEBUG.

There have been a number of instances where people have accidentally compiled

The attached patch prohibits rcutorture from being compiled into the

e8edc6e03a Detach sched.h from mm.h
First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.

This patch
a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
   getting them indirectly

Net result is:
a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
   they don't need sched.h
b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
   on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
   after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

99eaf3c45f lib/hexdump
Based on ace_dump_mem() from Grant Likely for the Xilinx SystemACE
CompactFlash interface.

Add print_hex_dump() & hex_dumper() to lib/hexdump.c and linux/kernel.h.

This patch adds the functions print_hex_dump() & hex_dumper().
print_hex_dump() can be used to perform a hex + ASCII dump of data to
syslog, in an easily viewable format, thus providing a common text hex dump
format.

hex_dumper() provides a dump-to-memory function. It converts one "line" of
output (16 bytes of input) at a time.

Example usages:
	print_hex_dump(KERN_DEBUG, DUMP_PREFIX_ADDRESS, frame->data, frame->len);
	hex_dumper(frame->data, frame->len, linebuf, sizeof(linebuf));

Example output using %DUMP_PREFIX_OFFSET:

8bb7844286 Add suspend-related notifications for CPU hotplug
Since nonboot CPUs are now disabled after tasks and devices have been
frozen and the CPU hotplug infrastructure is used for this purpose, we need
special CPU hotplug notifications that will help the CPU-hotplug-aware
subsystems distinguish normal CPU hotplug events from CPU hotplug events
related to a system-wide suspend or resume operation in progress. This
patch introduces such notifications and causes them to be used during
suspend and resume transitions. It also changes all of the
CPU-hotplug-aware subsystems to take these notifications into consideration
(for now they are handled in the same way as the corresponding "normal"
ones).

794543a236 Move LOG_BUF_SHIFT to a more sensible place
Several people have observed that perhaps LOG_BUF_SHIFT should be in a more
obvious place than under DEBUG_KERNEL. Under some circumstances (such as the
PARISC architecture), DEBUG_KERNEL can increase kernel size, which is an
undesirable trade off for something as trivial as increasing the kernel log
buffer size.

Instead, move LOG_BUF_SHIFT into "General Setup", so that people are more
likely to be able to change it such a circumstance that the default buffer
size is insufficient.

c6b40d16d1 fix sscanf %n match at end of input string
I was playing with some code that sometimes got a string where a %n
match should have been done where the input string ended, for example
like this:

  sscanf("abc123", "abc%d%n", &a, &n);  /* doesn't work */
  sscanf("abc123a", "abc%d%n", &a, &n); /* works */

However, the scanf function in the kernel doesn't convert the %n in that
case because it has already matched the complete input after %d and just
completely stops matching then. This patch fixes that.

properly again. Users other than ppp_deflate (the only Z_PACKET_FLUSH
user) should be unaffected.

1394f03221 blackfin architecture
This adds support for the Analog Devices Blackfin processor architecture, and
currently supports the BF533, BF532, BF531, BF537, BF536, BF534, and BF561
(Dual Core) devices, with a variety of development platforms including those
avaliable from Analog Devices (BF533-EZKit, BF533-STAMP, BF537-STAMP,
BF561-EZKIT), and Bluetechnix!  Tinyboards.

The Blackfin architecture was jointly developed by Intel and Analog Devices
Inc. (ADI) as the Micro Signal Architecture (MSA) core and introduced it in
December of 2000. Since then ADI has put this core into its Blackfin
processor family of devices. The Blackfin core has the advantages of a clean,
orthogonal,RISC-like microprocessor instruction set. It combines a dual-MAC
(Multiply/Accumulate), state-of-the-art signal processing engine and
single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) multimedia capabilities into a single
instruction-set architecture.

The Blackfin architecture, including the instruction set, is described by the
ADSP-BF53x/BF56x Blackfin Processor Programming Reference
http://blackfin.uclinux.org/gf/download/frsrelease/29/2549/Blackfin_PRM.pdf

The Blackfin processor is already supported by major releases of gcc, and
there are binary and source rpms/tarballs for many architectures at:
http://blackfin.uclinux.org/gf/project/toolchain/frs There is complete
documentation, including "getting started" guides available at:
http://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/ which provides links to the sources and
patches you will need in order to set up a cross-compiling environment for
bfin-linux-uclibc

This patch, as well as the other patches (toolchain, distribution,
uClibc) are actively supported by Analog Devices Inc, at:
http://blackfin.uclinux.org/

We have tested this on LTP, and our test plan (including pass/fails) can
be found at:
http://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=testing_the_linux_kernel

411f0f3edc Introduce CONFIG_HAS_DMA
Architectures that don't support DMA can say so by adding a config NO_DMA
to their Kconfig file. This will prevent compilation of some dma specific
driver code. Also dma-mapping-broken.h isn't needed anymore on at least
s390. This avoids compilation and linking of otherwise dead/broken code.

Other architectures that include dma-mapping-broken.h are arm26, h8300,
m68k, m68knommu and v850. If these could be converted as well we could get
rid of the header file.

476f35348e Safer nr_node_ids and nr_node_ids determination and initial values
The nr_cpu_ids value is currently only calculated in smp_init. However, it
may be needed before (SLUB needs it on kmem_cache_init!) and other kernel
components may also want to allocate dynamically sized per cpu array before
smp_init. So move the determination of possible cpus into sched_init()
where we already loop over all possible cpus early in boot.

Also initialize both nr_node_ids and nr_cpu_ids with the highest value they
could take. If we have accidental users before these values are determined
then the current valud of 0 may cause too small per cpu and per node arrays
to be allocated. If it is set to the maximum possible then we only waste
some memory for early boot users.

6cbf0c704d iomap: make the default iomap functions fail softer
We used to BUG_ON() for a badly mapped IO port, which is certainly
correct, but actually made it harder to debug the case where the ATA
drivers had incorrectly mapped a nonconnected ATA port.

So make badly mapped ports trigger a WARN_ON(), and throw the IO away
instead (and return all ones for reads). For things like broken driver
initialization - which is the most likely cause anyway - that should
mean that the machine comes up and is usable (at least that was the case
for the ATA breakage that triggered this patch).

It tends to be a whole lot easier to do a "dmesg" on a working machine
than to try to capture logs off a dead one.

(This was under Xen, but there's no reason it couldn't happen on bare
  hardware.)

This patch mallocs the local variables, thereby reducing the stack
usage to sane levels.

Also, up the heap size for the kernel decompressor to deal with the
extra allocation.

1df49008f4 [PATCH] fault injection: split up stacktrace filter Kconfig option
There is no prompt for CONFIG_STACKTRACE, so FAULT_INJECTION cannot be
selected without LOCKDEP enabled. (found by Paolo 'Blaisorblade'
Giarrusso)

In order to fix such broken Kconfig dependency, this patch splits up the
stacktrace filter support for fault injection by new Kconfig option, which
enables to use fault injection on the architecture which doesn't have
general stacktrace support.

53b8a315b7 [PATCH] Convert highest_possible_processor_id to nr_cpu_ids
We frequently need the maximum number of possible processors in order to
allocate arrays for all processors. So far this was done using
highest_possible_processor_id(). However, we do need the number of
processors not the highest id. Moreover the number was so far dynamically
calculated on each invokation. The number of possible processors does not
change when the system is running. We can therefore calculate that number
once.

1350770112 kobject: kobj->k_name verification fix
The function 'kobject_add' tries to verify the name of
a new kobject instance is properly set before continuing.
    if (!kobj->k_name)
        kobj->k_name = kobj->name;
    if (!kobj->k_name) {
        pr_debug("kobject attempted to be registered with no name!\n");
        WARN_ON(1);
        return -EINVAL;
    }
The statement:
    if (!kobj->k_name) {
        pr_debug("kobject attempted to be registered with no name!\n");
        WARN_ON(1);
        return -EINVAL;
    }
is useless the way it is right now, because it can never be true. I
think the
code was intended to be:
    if (!kobj->k_name)
        kobj->k_name = kobj->name;
    if (!*kobj->k_name) {
        pr_debug("kobject attempted to be registered with no name!\n");
        WARN_ON(1);
        return -EINVAL;
    }
because this would make sure the kobj->name buffer has something in it.
So the missing '*' is just a typo. Although, I would much prefer
expression like:
    if (*kobj->k_name == '\0') {
        pr_debug("kobject attempted to be registered with no name!\n");
        WARN_ON(1);
        return -EINVAL;
    }

because this would've made the intention clear, in this patch I just restore
the missing '*' without changing the coding style of the function.

9ac7849e35 devres: device resource management
Implement device resource management, in short, devres. A device
driver can allocate arbirary size of devres data which is associated
with a release function. On driver detach, release function is
invoked on the devres data, then, devres data is freed.

devreses are typed by associated release functions. Some devreses are
better represented by single instance of the type while others need
multiple instances sharing the same release function. Both usages are
supported.

devreses can be grouped using devres group such that a device driver
can easily release acquired resources halfway through initialization
or selectively release resources (e.g. resources for port 1 out of 4
ports).

This patch adds devres core including documentation and the following
managed interfaces.

* alloc/free	: devm_kzalloc(), devm_kzfree()
* IO region	: devm_request_region(), devm_release_region()
* IRQ		: devm_request_irq(), devm_free_irq()
* DMA		: dmam_alloc_coherent(), dmam_free_coherent(),
		  dmam_declare_coherent_memory(), dmam_pool_create(),

b592fcfe7f sysfs: Shadow directory support
The problem. When implementing a network namespace I need to be able
to have multiple network devices with the same name. Currently this
is a problem for /sys/class/net/*.

What I want is a separate /sys/class/net directory in sysfs for each
network namespace, and I want to name each of them /sys/class/net.

I looked and the VFS actually allows that. All that is needed is
for /sys/class/net to implement a follow link method to redirect
lookups to the real directory you want.

Implementing a follow link method that is sensitive to the current
network namespace turns out to be 3 lines of code so it looks like a
clean approach. Modifying sysfs so it doesn't get in my was is a bit
trickier.

I am calling the concept of multiple directories all at the same path
in the filesystem shadow directories. With the directory entry really
at that location the shadow master.

The following patch modifies sysfs so it can handle a directory
structure slightly different from the kobject tree so I can implement
the shadow directories for handling /sys/class/net/.

93fbff63e6 [IA64] make swiotlb use bus_to_virt/virt_to_bus
Convert all phys_to_virt/virt_to_phys uses to bus_to_virt/virt_to_bus, as is
what is meant and what is needed in (at least) some virtualized environments
like Xen.

cde14bbfb3 [IA64] swiotlb bug fixes
This patch fixes
- marking I-cache clean of pages DMAed to now only done for IA64
- broken multiple inclusion in include/asm-x86_64/swiotlb.h
- missing call to mark_clean in swiotlb_sync_sg()
- a (perhaps only theoretical) issue in swiotlb_dma_supported() when
io_tlb_end is exactly at the end of memory

542cfce6f3 kobject: kobject_uevent() returns manageable value
Since kobject_uevent() function does not return an integer value to
indicate if its operation was completed with success or not, it is worth
changing it in order to report a proper status (success or error) instead
of returning void.

DWARF2 unwinder stuck at system_call+0x7e/0x83
Leftover inexact backtrace:

This is a false positive as mce.c is unregistering/registering sysfs
interfaces cleanly on hotplug.

kref_put() and conditional decrement of refcnt seems to be the root cause
for this and the patch below resolves the issue for me.

d1526e2cda Remove stack unwinder for now
It has caused more problems than it ever really solved, and is
apparently not getting cleaned up and fixed. We can put it back when
it's stable and isn't likely to make warning or bug events worse.

In the meantime, enable frame pointers for more readable stack traces.

6a2d7a955d [PATCH] SLAB: use a multiply instead of a divide in obj_to_index()
When some objects are allocated by one CPU but freed by another CPU we can
consume lot of cycles doing divides in obj_to_index().

(Typical load on a dual processor machine where network interrupts are
handled by one particular CPU (allocating skbufs), and the other CPU is
running the application (consuming and freeing skbufs))

Here on one production server (dual-core AMD Opteron 285), I noticed this
divide took 1.20 % of CPU_CLK_UNHALTED events in kernel. But Opteron are
quite modern cpus and the divide is much more expensive on oldest
architectures :

On a 200 MHz sparcv9 machine, the division takes 64 cycles instead of 1
cycle for a multiply.

Doing some math, we can use a reciprocal multiplication instead of a divide.

If we want to compute V = (A / B)  (A and B being u32 quantities)
we can instead use :

V = ((u64)A * RECIPROCAL(B)) >> 32 ;

where RECIPROCAL(B) is precalculated to ((1LL << 32) + (B - 1)) / B

Note :

I wrote pure C code for clarity. gcc output for i386 is not optimal but
acceptable :

mull   0x14(%ebx)
mov    %edx,%eax // part of the >> 32
xor     %edx,%edx // useless
mov %eax,(%esp) // could be avoided
mov    %edx,0x4(%esp) // useless
mov    (%esp),%ebx
