As many open source projects have started doing it, we're removing the
current year from the copyright notice, so that we don't need to bump
it every year.
It seems like only the first year of publication is technically
relevant for copyright notices, and even that seems to be something
that many companies stopped listing altogether (in a version controlled
codebase, the commits are a much better source of date of publication
than a hardcoded copyright statement).
We also now list Godot Engine contributors first as we're collectively
the current maintainers of the project, and we clarify that the
"exclusive" copyright of the co-founders covers the timespan before
opensourcing (their further contributions are included as part of Godot
Engine contributors).
Also fixed "cf." Frenchism - it's meant as "refer to / see".
Backported from #70885.
Instead of fitting all atlas slices into a single image, which meant there
was a hard limit on the size, BakedLightmap will now save as many images
as needed to fit all the slices generated by the lightmapper.
This provides more realistic lighting with a very small performance cost.
The option is available in both GLES3 and GLES2, and can be enabled in
the Project Settings. This goes well with the ACES Fitted tonemapping mode
that was recently added.
When enabled, this also makes upgrading Godot 3.x projects to Godot 4.0 easier,
since lighting in 3.x will better match how it'll look in Godot 4.0.
This can be used to free some CPU cores when baking lightmaps.
When using fewer CPU cores, lightmap baking is slower but background
tasks aren't slowed down as much.
Higher values will make indirect lighting brighter.
A value of 1.0 represents physically accurate behavior, but higher values
can be used to make indirect lighting propagate more visibly when using
a low number of bounces.
This can be used to speed up bake times by lowering the number of bounces
then increasing the bounce indirect energy. Unlike BakedLightmapData's
energy property, this property does not affect direct lighting
emitted by light nodes or emissive materials.
We've been using standard C library functions `memcpy`/`memset` for these since
2016 with 67f65f6639.
There was still the possibility for third-party platform ports to override the
definitions with a custom header, but this doesn't seem useful anymore.
Backport of #48239.
- Based on C++11's `thread` and `thread_local`
- No more need to allocate-deallocate or check for null
- No pointer anymore, just a member variable
- Platform-specific implementations no longer needed (except for the few cases of non-portable functions)
- Simpler for `NO_THREADS`
- Thread ids are now the same across platforms (main is 1; others follow)
Added BakedLightmap.use_hdr and BakedLightmap.use_color properties
that can reduce the flie size of lightmap texture at the expense of quality.
Changed the denoiser to work in a single buffer, reducing RAM
usage. Also added the `-mstackrealign` flag in the denoiser compilation
for MinGW builds. This flag helped fix a bug in Embree, so I want to see
if it will help fix GH #45296.
- Fix crash when a ray hits a texel with a UV2 coordinate exactly
equal to 1.0.
- Take BakedLightmap extents into account.
- Clear capture data between bakes.
- Fix minor issues with seam correction.
Compiling with latest clang on macOS produced this error: use of undeclared identifier 'rand'.
Fixesgodotengine/godot#45342
This file is not present in 4.0/master.
- Fix Embree runtime when using MinGW (patch by @RandomShaper).
- Fix baking of lightmaps on GridMaps.
- Fix some GLSL errors.
- Fix overflow in the number of shader variants (GLES2).
Completely re-write the lightmap generation code:
- Follow the general lightmapper code structure from 4.0.
- Use proper path tracing to compute the global illumination.
- Use atlassing to merge all lightmaps into a single texture (done by @RandomShaper)
- Use OpenImageDenoiser to improve the generated lightmaps.
- Take into account alpha transparency in material textures.
- Allow baking environment lighting.
- Add bicubic lightmap filtering.
There is some minor compatibility breakage in some properties and methods
in BakedLightmap, but lightmaps generated in previous engine versions
should work fine out of the box.
The scene importer has been changed to generate `.unwrap_cache` files
next to the imported scene files. These files *SHOULD* be added to any
version control system as they guarantee there won't be differences when
re-importing the scene from other OSes or engine versions.
This work started as a Google Summer of Code project; Was later funded by IMVU for a good amount of progress;
Was then finished and polished by me on my free time.
