* Allows running the game in "movie writer" mode.
* It ensures entirely stable framerate, so your run can be saved stable and with proper sound (which is impossible if your CPU/GPU can't sustain doing this in real-time).
* If disabling vsync, it can save movies faster than the game is run, but if you want to control the interaction it can get difficult.
* Implements a simple, default MJPEG writer.
This new features has two main use cases, which have high demand:
* Saving game videos in high quality and ensuring the frame rate is *completely* stable, always.
* Using Godot as a tool to make movies and animations (which is ideal if you want interaction, or creating them procedurally. No other software is as good for this).
**Note**: This feature **IS NOT** for capturing real-time footage. Use something like OBS, SimpleScreenRecorder or FRAPS to achieve that, as they do a much better job at intercepting the compositor than Godot can probably do using Vulkan or OpenGL natively. If your game runs near real-time when capturing, you can still use this feature but it will play no sound (sound will be saved directly).
Usage:
$ godot --write-movie movie.avi [scene_file.tscn]
Missing:
* Options for configuring video writing via GLOBAL_DEF
* UI Menu for launching with this mode from the editor.
* Add to list of command line options.
* Add a feature tag to override configurations when movie writing (fantastic for saving videos with highest quality settings).
This adds a partial 2D/3D color to each icon for easier visual grepping.
The icons are not fully colored as these nodes don't inherit from
Node2D or Node3D. This is similar in principle to how the
WorldEnvironment editor icon is colored.
Implemented by request of @neikeq to advance in the GDExtension version of Mono.
* If a Resource type is missing upon load, it will be remembered together with its data (Unless manually overriden).
* If a Node type is missing upon load, it will be also be remembered together with its data (unless deleted).
This feature makes working with GDExtension much easier, as it ensures that missing types no longer cause data loss.
Implements https://github.com/godotengine/godot-proposals/issues/4096
* Nodes can be marked unique to the scene in the editor (or via code).
* Unique nodes can be accessed via the **%** prefix at any point in the path. From that point in the path (depending on whether the scene of the path is), the unique node will be fetched.
* Implementation is very optimal, as these nodes are cached.
This replaces the existing "chainlink" instance icon that was
used for external links. That icon is still used for scene instancing.
The icon was designed by redlamp.

Add "generate_mipmap" font import option.
Add some missing features to the Sprite3D.
Move BiDi override code from Control to TextServer.
Add functions to access TextServer font cache textures.
Add MSDF related flags and shader to the standard material.
Change standard material cache to use HashMap instead of Vector.
* Instead of containing single animations, AnimationPlayer now contains libraries.
* Libraries, in turn, contain the animations.
This paves the way for implementing the possibility of importing scenes as animation libraries, finally allowing to import animations separate from the 3D models.
Missing (will be done on separate PRs):
* Make it possible to import scenes (dae/fbx/gltf) as animation libraries.
* Make it possible for AnimationTree to import animation libraries on its own, so it does not rely on AnimationPlayer for everything.
This only affects newly created projects.
- Use a 128×128 resolution to make the icon look crisp on hiDPI displays.
- Darken the icon's outside area and remove the border, as the
contrast rate between the icon and its background is now sufficient.
This different design also allows distinguishing projects that
were made with Godot 3.x from projects made with Godot 4.0.
The new default project theme uses StyleBoxFlat extensively for
a more modern design and better scalability to multiple resolutions.
SVG icons are now used in place of PNG icons. While this does not
allow for true vector-based icon drawing (icons are still rasterized
at load-time), this makes the design work easier for contributors
and opens the door to vector drawing in the future (e.g. with polygons
or SDFs).
Like for editor icons, the SVG header file is now built automatically
when a SVG file is changed. This removing the need for running
`make_header.py` manually (TODO).
The "Use Hidpi" project setting has been removed in favor of a
"Default Theme Scale" project setting, which allows creating the
default theme at a higher/lower scale than the default.
This can be used when designing GUIs with a high base resolution
to ensure crisp visuals.

GPUParticles attractors and collision are currently only available in 3D.
Their 2D counterparts haven't been implemented yet, but they will use
separate nodes.
This makes the Linear and Cubic icons in particular easier to
distinguish from each other.
The Cubic interpolation icon's curve was also changed to be
more distinguishable from the Linear icon's curve.
* New track type BLEND_SHAPE
* Blend shapes are imported via this new track type
* Processing is more optimized (no longer relies on variants)
* Modified the Blend Shape API in MeshInstance3D to use indices rather than StringNames (more optimizes)
* Promo: Fixed a small bug in gizmo updating in Node3D that affected performance
Dedicated BlendShape tracks are required for both optimization and eventually implementing them in animation compression.
* `Animation.TYPE_TRANSFORM3D` track is gone.
* Added POSITION_3D, ROTATION_3D, SCALE_3D tracks.
* GLTF2, Collada, FBX importers will only import the track types found.
* Skeleton3D bone poses are now Pos/Rot/Scale, pose matrix removed.
* AnimationPlayer and AnimationTree animate these tracks separately, only when found.
* Removed BakeReset code, is useless with these changes.
This is the first in a series of commits designed to make the animation system in Godot more useful, which includes:
* Better compatibility with Autodesk products
* Better reusability of animations across models (including retargeting).
* Proper animation compression.
* etc.
*Note* GLTF2 animation saving went broken with this PR, needs to be fixed in a subsequent one.
The icon was present in `editor/icons/`, but it was never implemented
in the editor gizmos code.
This also removes some unused gizmo drawing code (overridden methods
that are no longer called anywhere).
Instead of having a physics node named Static that can be either Static
or Kinematic, AnimatableBody is added again as a separate node:
-Inherited from StaticBody to make its usage clearer
-Still separated from CharacterBody to make its usage more focused
Properly implemented constant velocity for kinematic bodies in godot
physics servers (induced velocity without actually moving).
Also updated description for the different physics nodes to make their
usage clearer.
This PR and commit adds the functionality to arrange nodes in VisualScript/VisualShader editor. The layout generated by this
feature is compact, with minimum crossings between connections
& uniform horizontal & vertical gaps between the nodes.
This work has been sponsored by GSoC '21.
Full list of additions/changes:
• Added arrange_nodes() method in GraphEdit module.
• This method computes new positions for all the selected
nodes by forming blocks and compressing them.
The nodes are moved to these new positions.
• Adding this method to GraphEdit makes it available for
use in VisualScript/VisualShaders editors and its other
subclasses.
• Button with an icon has been added to call arrange_nodes() in GraphEdit.
• This button is inherited by VisualScript/VisualShaders editors
to invoke the method.
• Undo/redo is functional with this method.
• By using signals in arrange_nodes(), position changes are registered
in undo/redo stack of the subclass that is using the method.
• Metadata of the method has been updated in ClassDB
• Method description has been added to class reference of GraphEdit
Infinite inertia:
Not needed anymore, since it's now possible to set one-directional
collision layers in order for characters to ignore rigid bodies, while
rigid bodies still collide with characters.
Ray shapes:
They were introduced as a work around to allow constant speed on slopes,
which is now possible with the new property in CharacterBody instead.
* Renames for 2D and 3D
* Class name was confusing, given both 2D and 3D have a "visible" property that is unrelated to actual on-screen visibility.
* New name makes it clear that this is about visibility on screen.
* GIProbe is now VoxelGI
* BakedLightmap is now LightmapGI
As godot adds more ways to provide GI (as an example, SDFGI in 4.0), the different techniques (which have different pros/cons) need to be properly named to avoid confusion.
PhysicsBody now has methods move_and_collide/test_move and needed
properties for these methods: safe margin, locked axes (3D only).
Moved collision_exceptions from StaticBody to PhysicsBody for 3D
(same as 2D, and conforms to documentation).
RigidBody doesn't have test_motion method anymore, it's now redundant
with PhysicsBody.test_move.
This uses the accent color to match pressed CheckButtons after they
were updated. Checked checkboxes are now more prominent in the user's
peripheral vision, which can be useful at times. This also matches
how checkboxes look in most operating systems and web browsers.
More saturated icons go better with the new editor theme.
These color changes only apply when using a dark theme.
The editor icon saturation can still be adjusted in the Editor Settings.
Setting the editor icon saturation setting to 0.77 should roughly match
the old icon saturation.
- Move most properties from TileMap to TileSet,
- Make TileSet more flexible, supporting more feature (several
collision layers, etc...),
- Fusion both the TileMap and TileSet editor,
- Implement TileSetSources, and thus a new way to index tiles in the TileSet,
- Rework the TileSet and TileMap editors completely,
- Implement an editor zoom widget (and use it in several places)
Added message type filters.
Added ability to search.
Added ability to collapse multiple duplicate messages into one line.
Updated layout to allow for more vertical space in log text area.
It existed in early Godot releases to allow working around hardware limitations
on max texture sizes (e.g. hardware limits of 1024x1024 pixels).
Nowadays the max texture size supported natively by Godot is 16384x16384, and
even low end mobile hardware should support at least 4096x4096.
The LargeTexture implementation is basically just an array with offsets, sizes
and textures and should be easy to replicate with a custom Texture resource if
needed - solving most of its bugs on the way as the implementation removed here
has various unimplemented or incomplete methods.
This makes it possible to see whether a scrollbar grabber is at the top
or at the bottom of a scrollbar. Also, if a scrollable area is very
large, this makes it easier to notice that the area can be scrolled
(since the grabber is proportionally very small).
The scrollbar grabbers were also made thicker and slightly more opaque
for better visibility, especially in peripheral vision.
The blue accent color is now used, which matches the default editor
accent color.
It doesn't change to match the currently configured accent color
automatically, but doing so would require modifying the CheckButton
class a lot for little benefit.
Resolvesgodotengine/godot-proposals#1246.
It is difficult to tell the difference between the handles for adjusting
curves and the points themselves when looking at a Path gizmo.
This re-uses the icons used for Path2D.
Unlike Path2D, this does not use a different icon for smooth vs sharp
points, as using a potentially different material for each point would
prevent batching the points in add_handles (and adding them out-of-order
messes up other logic based on handle indices).
This includes a public API change to allow specifying a texture for a
handle material. This allows spatial gizmo plugins to customize the way
a handle is rendered, if desired, but does not break existing behavior
(as providing no texture uses the default).
The path handle icons were resized as well. 16x16 is the standard icon
size. These icons were 10x10 rather than 16x16, and appeared rather
small in the editor.
To resize, I:
- Opened the original in Inkscape
- Resized the document to 16x16
- Opened the transform dialog
- Scaled by 160% proportionally
- Used Align/Distribute to center on the page
- Saved the document
- Cleaned with `svgcleaner --multipass`
A new `env.Run` method is added which allows to control the verbosity
of builders output automatically depending on whether the "verbose"
option is set. It also allows to optionally run any SCons commands in a
subprocess using the existing `run_in_subprocess` method, unifying
the interface. `Action` objects wrap all builder functions to include a
short build message associated with any action.
Notably, this removes quite verbose output generated by `make_doc_header`
and `make_editor_icons_action` builders.
This patch adds ability to include external, user-defined C++ modules
to be compiled as part of Godot via `custom_modules` build option
which can be passed to `scons`.
```
scons platform=x11 tools=yes custom_modules="../project/modules"
```
Features:
- detects all available modules under `custom_modules` directory the
same way as it does for built-in modules (not recursive);
- works with both relative and absolute paths on the filesystem;
- multiple search paths can be specified as a comma-separated list.
Module custom documentation and editor icons collection and generation
process is adapted to work with absolute paths needed by such modules.
Also fixed doctool bug mixing absolute and relative paths respectively.
Implementation details:
- `env.module_list` is a dictionary now, which holds both module name as
key and either a relative or absolute path to a module as a value.
- `methods.detect_modules` is run twice: once for built-in modules, and
second for external modules, all combined later.
- `methods.detect_modules` was not doing what it says on the tin. It is
split into `detect_modules` which collects a list of available modules
and `write_modules` which generates `register_types` sources for each.
- whether a module is built-in or external is distinguished by relative
or absolute paths respectively. `custom_modules` scons converter
ensures that the path is absolute even if relative path is supplied,
including expanding user paths and symbolic links.
- treats the parent directory as if it was Godot's base directory, so
that there's no need to change include paths in cases where custom
modules are included as dependencies in other modules.
Configured for a max line length of 120 characters.
psf/black is very opinionated and purposely doesn't leave much room for
configuration. The output is mostly OK so that should be fine for us,
but some things worth noting:
- Manually wrapped strings will be reflowed, so by using a line length
of 120 for the sake of preserving readability for our long command
calls, it also means that some manually wrapped strings are back on
the same line and should be manually merged again.
- Code generators using string concatenation extensively look awful,
since black puts each operand on a single line. We need to refactor
these generators to use more pythonic string formatting, for which
many options are available (`%`, `format` or f-strings).
- CI checks and a pre-commit hook will be added to ensure that future
buildsystem changes are well-formatted.
The gizmo icon obstructed the line-based camera gizmo, which made it
difficult to see the actual camera orientation.
This also removes the unused SpatialStreamPlayer gizmo icon.
This closes https://github.com/godotengine/godot-proposals/issues/425.
The crosshair makes freelook navigation a bit easier, while making it
clearer that it's possible to select nodes by clicking while in
freelook mode.
The crosshair is only displayed while in freelook mode.
It uses an icon designed to be visible on any background.
- Add icons to the up/down bandwidth LineEdits for better
visual grepping.
- Make bandwidth LineEdit texts more prominent when data is being
received/emitted.
- Add more spacing between the up and down bandwidth LineEdits.
- Initialize the bandwidth texts using `set_bandwidth()` to ensure
consistency with the actual bandwidth texts once the profiler
is started.
- Fix icon colors when switching from a dark theme to a light theme
and vice versa.
- Add missing `EDSCALE` constants for hiDPI scaling.
The arrow is now displayed at the left to be consistent with
other places where folding is used. The arrow icons used are now
consistent with the rest of the editor. The `arrow_up` icon is
no longer used anywhere, so it was removed.
Additional spacing was also added for a better visual appearance.
- Add new handle icons for path/polygon editors
- Add smooth path point icons and curve tangent icons
- Use a gray color for tangent lines in the Path2D and Path editors
- Use antialiasing for Path2D lines
Keyframe SVG icons are now 10×10 instead of 8×8 (except for
Bezier-related icons). This makes them easier to select
since the empty space is part of the clickable area.
Selected keyframes are now also visually larger to make them
easier to distinguish from unselected keyframes.
This closes#27276.
This icon was likely added to be used in the renderer selection
dropdown, but now that the GLES2 and GLES3 icons have been removed
in favor of just using text, it'll probably never be used.
The functionality is similar to how `doc_classes` are retrieved per module.
The build system will search for custom icons path defined per module via
`get_icons_path()` method in `config.py` or default icons path.
If such paths don't exist, only the editor's own icons will be built.
Most module icons were moved from editor/icons to respective modules.
Godot 2.1 and 3.0 had this feature but it was lost in the rewrite
of the animation editor in 3.1.
Drop unused KeyValid icon, since all valid keys now have a custom
type icon.
